You dont need a guy to be a 25 ppg scorer to be the centerpiece of your team. No one has said Rondo should be our leading scorer. He shoudnt. But he is the perfect piece to build around because he does everything. He is a gap filler. To me, he is eons better to build around than a young scorer because of all he brings. He is a great point guard and that generally the most essential piece on a basketball team. Obviously there are exceptions but most teams have a solid point guard. Chris Paul isnt even the number 1 scoring option on his team. That offense runs through Blake Griffin. For me, Rondo is the essential first piece.

Rondo and Russell.  Yup, that seems like a reasonable analogy.

Apples to Bananas... I don't understand how a conversation can take place on this when you're talking about a center and a point guard...

Forget the eras in which they played, there's no real place to start by comparing the impact of these two players...

Blasphemer! Comparing one of the best players to ever play the game to Rondo is just blasphemy.

Russell could dominate, something Rondo has yet to do...in any facet of his game

Russel was also a center who gobbled up about 20 rebounds and 10 blocks on any given night.

Russel also played on a loaded team where he didn't have to score as much.

Russel might have been the greatest defensive player in NBA history.

Of course someone had to suggest I was comparing the two. Thanks for jumping on the obvious train. DISCLAIMER: Iam not comparing Rajon to Bill Russell.

false. Rondo has dominated a slew of games whether it be through scoring defense or assists.

The only comparison to Russell right now in the NBA is Howard.

A defensive minded C, strong rebounder, very athletic for their position and a top 2 player in the league.

And we can see the difference in impacts that Howard makes and Rondo makes.

I have to disagree. Rondo is an great player, but Iv'e yet to see him take over and win a game all by himself, and ive been watching the celts since 2001

What is the point of mentioning Russell at all then? Whether or not you mean to, you in fact are comparing the two players. You should change the thread title if that's not your desire.

EDIT: I changed the thread title.

Bill Russell NEVER took a game off, Rajon Rondo constantly takes games off... this comparison doesn't work.

It's not ok. It's a huge handicap to the starting team. No sense going over the obvious reasons. AND HE'S ALWAYS HURT!
