Depressing realization: Brandon Bass could really help a contender.

This tweet during the Suns game tonight really made me think -- he's right.  Brandon Bass probably could help a contender.  There are probably more than a couple of them who could use such a productive backup PF (the Clippers in particular come to mind).

With the Celtics looking like a borderline playoff team, I think this becomes a serious question:

Do we trade Brandon Bass to try to get some kind of minor asset, such as a late first or a marginal prospect, knowing that he could opt out and leave for nothing this summer?

Or do we hold onto him and try to re-sign him to a reasonable deal as a young[ish] starting PF for the beginning of the rebuilding process?

Note: with the way Bass is playing, I don't think Carl Landry is an unrealistic reference point both for trade value as well as what kind of contract he's likely to look for in the off-season.  Bass probably isn't worth quite that much, but not too much less, either.

It really depends on what kind of contract you think Bass could get.

Unlike with Glen Davis, I wouldn't laugh at another team being willing to pay Bass more than the MLE, so I would expect that Ainge might be able to get something nice in a sign-and-trade.  The main concern is that sign-and-trades are the only situation where base-year compensation still matters, so too big of a raise on his current contract would complicate a trade.

see what you can get.  If he fetches a first rounder, deal him.

He's too small to be a starting PF in this league, but a contender would love to bring him off the bench..preferably a WC contendor

I agree that he's too small to be a good starting PF, but I'd be fine using him as our starting PF for 25-30 minutes a game when we begin the rebuilding process.

Yeah, that's what happens when I'm looking at like 4 different tabs at once.  Think I'm posting in the game thread when I'm not.

Keep him if he is willing to be a life long bench player with a mid level type contract. Trade him if not.

I would try and package Bass and Ray to a contender to try and get a young player with big upside back much like the Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers for Joe Johnson trade in 2002.

Maybe you could land Big Al or Millsap from Utah? Big Al only has 1 more year left on his deal after this season and Millsap is signed to a reasonable contract,I think he would be great with Rondo.

Probably have to get a 3rd team involved

or maybe Ray and Bass for Josh Smith ? or get a 3rd team invloved and land Atlanta the center that they need.

Ray and Bass to chicago for Korver and Gibson or Asik ?

Keep him, no one knows which way the Celtics are truly going to go this off season. Despite much of the board assuming that we're going to be going the way of the Nets from a few years ago, no one knows what Ainge is planning. For all we know Ainge signs D-Will/Howard and trades Rondo for another player (Pierce would have to be let go in that scenario). Or for all we know he absolutely blows it up and allows us the next 5-7 years to rebuild.

Don't worry about Bass et al we should start with the Big Three and the most assets and Picks as possible. I would prefer young players and Draft Picks over the next three years. If bass leave thats more cap space to recruit players we really want that might be available.  Start with O
Pierce then Allen and lastly Garnett. all of them should bring First round picks. Pierce still have game- with Veteran experience;  Allen has some game with an expiring contract and kevin has a large expiring contract. He might be able to help a contender for the remainder of the year as well. Three young players and Three first round draft pick sound about right.
