A coworker of mine is a Laker fan and just sent this to me.  Thoughts?

I would agree, and I think Kobe falls short.  Jordan plus Shaq would have taken Detroit in 4 games....

I dont think Kobe is as good as MJ, but I do think he is the only person who's earned that right to the comparison

Kobe is probably the player we've seen who is most similar to MJ in terms of body type, athleticism, play-style, and competitiveness.  But he still doesn't come close.

Most similar player, definitely.

However, if we're comparing overall players then that's a load of bull.  How the heck is Kobe the closest to MJ?  Obviously Bird, Magic, and Oscar could have never been the "next" Jordan, but they're surely the next best thing to him.  If Kobe doesn't match-up to those guys, how can he be the "only" one who deserves comparisons?

He's really on that second tier of perimeter players with Erving and West, and I don't even think he's clearly better than they were (both more efficient scorers).
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I assume he means current players.  If that's so, I agree with his argument:  Kobe is the player closest to MJ in today's NBA.  He's still not particularly close in my mind, though.

MJ is a class act on and off the court.  Kobe is PITA .

Kobe has alot of rings, but he had a TON more help getting them.

Yea , he can be mentioned with MJ....but is he the same NO WAY.

Dr J ...was better than Kobe, all you have do is see some old VA Squires ABA footage, he is not human.

  • It's all about the TEAM!
Well, the article starts off with the statement "Ever since Jordan retired...." I personally agree with it. The one thing Jordan was, was clutch. How many times did we get to the end with everything on the line and know Jordan was going to take it and even though we knew he was going to take it, it went in.

I also agree with those saying Kobe is the closest since Jordan retired but not as good. I agree with that. He just keeps winning championships. Not by himself, but him and his teammates kept getting the job done. Many times, Kobe has been clutch when they needed him the most. Not always, but better than most.

A lot of people want to put Lebron up there. How clutch has Lebron been? How many teams did he carry to championships? How many clutch shots has he taken and made with everything on the line? This is not even close....

Modesty must forbid Jordan from saying more about his narcissism and greatness.

His greatness obviously didn't transcend to his current profession.

Why do great players have to take the last shot?  Did the Celtics really want Russell taking the last shot?  How often did Magic take the last shot?

You don't have to take the last shot to be an all time great player.  That argument is just silly.

Certainly helps build the legend, though.

I'm certainly not going to say Kobe is in any way as good as Jordan, but to put him below Dr. J?  Please.
