I guess the plan here is to wait out this mediocre season and utilize our "boatloads" of caproom in the offseason.

We'll only have the following players under contract:
Pierce = 16.8 mil
Rondo = 11 mil
Bass = 4.2 mil (player option)
Bradley = 1.6 mil
JaJuan Johnson = 1.1 mil

Roughly 35 mil total.   We'll have two 1st rounders to sign as well (our own pick and the Clippers pick) so that'll probably leave us somewhere around 38 million (no Jeff Green, Ray or KG).

Assuming the cap stays at 58 mil, what's the IDEAL dream scenario here?  Dwight Howard?  I imagine if he decided to sign with the Celtics he'd want max money (no need to take less like the Heat threesome did)... so probably some kind of sign and trade with Orlando where Dwight signs an extension starting at 20 mil and the Magic get a trade exception out of it.  We'd have just enough room under the cap to take on his 20 mil salary.   Then what?... you let Ray, Jeff Green and KG walk, right... unless all three of them agree to sign with Boston for the vet minimum.

So you just head into 2012-13 with Rondo, Dwight, aging Paul Pierce + nothing?

Even in the dream scenario, this team is a few months away from being blown up.

Honestly, I don't think you can include Bass' salary in there, as he will totally opt out and try and get a better deal.  Having said that, we'll have around 30.5 million committed to four guys.  I'm thinking Moore signed a two-year deal, so his salary might be around 750K.. So figure roughly 31 mill committed to 5 players.  Here's what I would do:

1. Even though he's restricted, I'd offer Kevin Love a 6 yr, 96 mill deal (16 per) and hope that the Wolves don't match.

2. Re-sign Jeff Green to a 3 yr 27 mill deal (9 per)

3. Using Bird rights (which allows us to exceed the cap and re-sign our own guys),  I would re-sign Bass, Garnett, Allen, and Pietrus to the following deals:

Allen 2 yrs - 14 mill ( 7 per)
Garnett - 1 yr - 8 mill (8 per)
Bass - 3 yrs - 18 mill ( 6 per)
Pietrus - 2 yrs - 10 mill ( 5 per)

I would then try and move into the late lottery (by combining picks) and nab Austin Rivers, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, or John Henson.

Doesn't work.  You need to renounce bird rights in order to utilize cap space.  Also, we have two first rounders and two 2nd rounders we will be adding in the offseason... so even if Bass walks you're still looking at around 24 mil in cap space at the most.  So it would be enough to get your pipe dream of Kevin Love at 16 mil (will never happen) and sign Jeff Green to 8 mil.  Then unless KG, Ray, Bass and Pietris are willing to take the vet minimum... you lose them.

Still... I'd much rather have Kevin Love and Jeff Green than Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett... so I support this pipe dream.

so we're going to sign the three best free agents, including two restricted free agents, each of whom will probably ask for a max or near-max contract, with our cap room which will likely be enough for a little bit more than one max contract?

yeah, i'd call that a dream scenario.

 That "WISH LIST" will look more like the LAKERS lineup in about 3 years , when Kobe gets ready to retire than the Celtics.

 The "LUCKY" Celtics land a 35 year old Gasol, a cripple Bynum, 40 year old Dirk, 45 year old Steve Nash  , and ....Yes Sheeeeeedd will be back at the ripe young age of 55 years old.
We'll lose the only lottery pick ,  We will get 6 worthless draft picks, two will get hit by cars , and one is shot by a terrorist..other three perish in a ship wreck...if a bunch of bad luck can happen ...by golly we'll see it.

Dwight Howard
Kevin Love
Eric Gordon

....please add BLAKE GRIFFIN...see below for details

Oh I forgot.. how stupid of me....Not only will the LAKERS have ALL these players, I suspect they will fleece the Clippers out of Blake Griffen as well ,a trade for World Peace straight up.

GOTTA love the NBA

I forgot that we have to renounce the rights first, thus making them unrestricted FA's.  Well, with the 28 mill or so, I'd do the following then:

1. Sign Eric Gordon - 5 yrs 65 mill
2. Sign Green - 3 yrs 27 mill
3. Re-sign Ray - 2 yrs 12 mill
4. Pietrus - 1 yr vet min

Take our 4 picks this year (two 1st rounders and a two seconds) and try to get into the Top 8 to get a 4 or a 5.  Perry Jones III, Sullinger, Henson, Thomas Robinson, and Terrence Jones come to mind.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I obviously would love to have Dwight or Kevin Love and will be hoping, but on another note, people still seem to have J. Green getting a multi-year deal starting at 9 per. Is this still going to happen or will gms shy away from him - either on years or amount per year? I am thinking more of a 2 year, 5-6 mill (per year). I guess this might be conservative.

Pietrus will not be signing with anyone for the vet minimum. He will make at least 4mil, If I remember right he is making 6mil this year (our min plus 4ish from the suns)

Realistically if we use our cap room on anyone... it will be on Jeff Green.  That is, if we have any money left over after re-signing KG and Ray

KG - 7 mil
Ray - 7 mil
Jeff Green - 6 mil

That's all the cap space

I have a feeling KG and Ray can get more elsewhere

No way KG keeps playing after this season the way things are going.  He looks like he's on his last legs, and the only way he keeps playing through the pain is for a shot at a championship.
