Alright, I'm not entirely sure the title works, but hopefully I can get my point across by the time this is done.
Jeff wrote a great article about why blowing it up is a bad idea, and he makes several great points. On the other hand, I also think it's valid to wonder, as many are, "Can we get more, in the long run, by trading Ray (or KG, or whoever) to get some good young(er) assets with an eye toward the future?" At least part of the rationale behind this is the belief that we could get more by making a trade now than by merely keeping these guys until the end of their contracts and then using "their" money to pursue free agents. What I'm proposing here is something I don't necessarily think the team SHOULD do, but it's a possibility that I haven't seen discussed yet and should at least be considered.
If it seems to Danny in the near future that this team has entered "also-ran" status, then how about, if the right opportunity presents itself, trading Ray (or KG, or whoever) in exchange for young(er), less-expensive talent, then re-signing Ray (or KG) on the cheap next season. Net result: the acquisition of younger, promising talent while still preserving a good chunk of next summer's projected cap space, possibly making the team more attractive to free agents, and the return of our beloved vets in diminished but still important roles.
Of course, there are about a thousand factors that will go into the decisions regarding the team's future -- including how the Cs do in the next month or so, how the players' health holds up, how certain players are performing and how much (or little) they're contributing, and whether Danny prefers young NBAers or draft picks. There's certainly plenty of food for thought for us fans.
