Its a possibility, but I think they only do it with his blessing, and likely would only be after he decides to retire.

I think there is a legitimate possibility both Pierce and KG retire after this season, and if Pierce retires, they will likely work out a buyout, and amnesty the money remaining (or something like that).
I think there is zero chance PP gets amnestied without his retirement. I know we are fans of the team and not of the players but if this was done against his wishes then Danny would be run out of town by the masses and it wouldn't be pretty. I also think Danny knows that.
How can you be a fan of the "team and not the players" when the players are what make up the team. What are you a fan of, the logo? Wyc Grousbeck?

Well, I think you can be a fan of the team, and just cheer for whoever is in green that year, without getting too attached to individual players.

Goes back to the whole "cheering for laundry" idea. (Which I buy into to great extent)

Either this Summer or next.  Bank on it.

This is PP's fairwell tour one way and I hope all fans recognize that.

Why would they do that this summer??? It not like he has a huge contract and the only real big FA is Howard. They can afford Howard with Peirce contract, and even sign an other guy for 10 mill easy.

And they wont do it the year after because his contract is up...

No way Pierce gets amnestied unless its with his blessing.

This guy has been the face of the franchise for close to 15 years.  The torch bearer of his generation for Celtics greats.  The organization exercises common sense here.

Easy to say now.  Much harder to stick to when that cap room is the difference between bringing on Kevin Love or being a lottery team

Since when are those two things mutually exclusive?

It was an example.  The point is if we have the opportunity to bring on a 25 year old stud at PF...it's tough to turn that down because you want to keep your 33 year old vet on the downside of his career.  He's not in the shape that Ray is; he isn't going to be putting up 15 - 20 at 35 years old

Pierce's contract is the best in the league, as far as superstars goes, look what Kobe is making and they're almost the same age.
Pierce and Dirk are the best contracts in the league.

But Pierce is not going to stop you from doing that.  The C's will have plenty of cap space to sign a max player, with Pierce under contract.  And Pierce might be the difference between being a lottery team or not, even if you have Love.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
Highly unlikely. If there's a market for Shane Battier in this league, Pierce will see out his contract. He's still one of the better SF in the league, can still score, defend, lead, and win you games with championship calibur experience. This topic was fueled by a rapid overreaction to 9 mediocre-bad games by a team that has failed to live up to it's own dominant standards of the last four seasons. Pierce is out of shape, he started the season injured and is probably not even 100%. They are also incorporating several new additions to the team, including JO, who is still a bit of an unknown quantity because of all of his health problems--they need several more games to play together, form some cohesion and learn the plays on both ends. I don't feel it's a contender, but it is not due to a dramatic recession in Pierce's skills or athleticism.

I think Pierce has a reasonable contract that would enable the celtics to move him if they decided to go that route but off the top of my head I would think that Durant, Howard, Lebron are better contracts.

I would like to see Paul coming off the bench like Hondo.

The Celtics would never amnesty Pierce because he has buyout language in his contract and because if he is amnestied then there is a chance that another team bids to be able to pick up a portion of his contract and retain his services.

The Celtics ownership, Danny, Doc and Pierce have WAY to much respect for each other to have Pierce's rights as a player be put out there for anyone to be able to bid on and pick him up. The ownership and management of this team wouldn't put his whereabouts as to his last playing days into that much uncertainty. They will be retiring his number to the rafters and be bringing him back like they do Cousy and Heinsohn and Havlicek and Russell to represent this team.

No, they will buy him out and allow him to choose his own playing destination post Celtics or they will allow him to retire a Celtic, which I think is the most likely scenario.

That's provided he plays up to his superstar status. This is still not a given.

Players come and go. Will you go root for some other team when your favorite players retire? Or will you become a fan of Kobe if he gets traded to the Celtics?
