While I'm not quite ready to start someone who I haven't seen play yet, if he could start I still say I would bring Pierce off the bench, not Ray. Pierce can still create his own shot and could really help carry a second unit, while Ray is basicly a spot up shooter. If i'm the coach of the other team I make sure someone's always covering Ray with a second unit as it would be easy to double off pretty much anyone but Bass. It just takes Ray out of the game.

Good thought..

Also there was a noticable difference in ray's game when he wasn't playing w/ rondo last year.  Nothing against DWest but rondo tends to get the ball to players at exactly the right time at the right spot.

To me this is the biggest thing.  Plus our starters come out after 5 mins anyways, so I don't know whether Pietrus starting or coming off the bench is that big of a difference.

Not a fan of Ray out there with no ball-handlers/play-makers.  The Ray pick and roll is just too easy to trap.

I was pushing for PP off the bench with Green starting much to the horror of some people who thought I was saying Green was the better player.  I agree that PP can create his own shot and is simply a more rounded player than Ray.  If we go through a period where the team hasn't improved and seems sluggish than I agree with you and Paul should move to bench to shake things up.  Our second unit with paul & bass would be offensive juggernaut and there hopefully wouldn't be any rest for opposing teams starters

It ain't happening.   Coaches worry more about their starters delivering than their bench these days.   Do you really think the Captain will sit down?  I don't.

Ray is our leading scorer, homeboy. What games have you been watching?

Can't we just bring Gerald Green back?

Pietrus is not starting material, imo.  If he's a fixture in the starting lineup, we are in trouble.

There seem to be quite a few people who have very high expectations for Pietrus here (not specifically this thread, just a general observation, there seems to be a lot of highly optimistic Pietrus posts on Celticsblog).

I think those expectations are too high and that they should lower them some.

Pietrus is a fairly unintelligent offensive player who is known as a detriment to ball-movement (ball stopper). His scoring efficiency is routinely mediocre due to his suspect shot-selection. And he is a poor passer.

Offensively, Pietrus is a very streaky player with poor decision-making skills and it's those poor decision making skills that have stopped him from fulfilling his potential (as an elite role player) everywhere he has been.

I don't think anyone here is debating if Pietrus is better than Allen.  The debate is how to best mix the roster.  Allen's minutes wouldn't change just SOME of his match-ups would.  Due to the condensed season a deep and decent bench is vital  Plus, I think it is key to have a good blend of veterans playing with younger more athletic players.  When we play all of the oldies together they really struggle against athletic teams..

As with the point let's wait until Pietrus, Of course we all need to see where he's at.  It's just speculation and I didn't know that it isn't allowed on this board which BTW is full of speculators..  No one on here is paid to post as far as I know..

Unless he's a Popovich style starter, where he get's the starting title but the better player (Pierce) get's the starting minutes and closes out the game.

which is what I assume the poster is talking about....kind of like how Deshaqn stevenson started for the Mavs but Jason terry was getting starting minutes/closing out the game.

the difference is that Terry can create his own offense, while Ray allen is more of a player who IMO creates alot of his offense off Rondo/screens

I disagree with this.  Ray has always been able to score.  In Seattle in his first year he was basically their point guard.  He had Cassel in Milwaukee but he was always more of an offense pg.  If anything with the Celts he's just more efficient because he gets less touches but most of them are in good positions.

Unless Pierce is out, starting Pietrus is a dumb idea.
