Can the Stretch Exception in the new CBA be used while keeping a player under contract? In other words, after this season could we stretch Paul Pierce's $32M remaining over 3 years vs. 2? Making his salary around $10M instead of $15M? Or does the player have to be waived, and then you can stretch their salary?

The stretch exception can only be used on waived players.  Additionally, the only players who can be waived under the stretch exception are players signed under this CBA.

However, I do think the new CBA allows renegotiation of contracts to some degree.  I haven't seen all of the specifics on that, though.

Thanks for the info. A renegotiation wouldn't be bad though. Pierce could definitely play for 3 more seasons. Ray too, not sure about KG though.

have we looked into re-signing players you use the amnesty exemption on? i know its just a dream but i dream of Pierce, KG and Ray next season combined for less then 15 million on the cap.

We can't re-sign Pierce if we amnesty him until his original contract runs out.
