Big Baby having hard time adapting.

It appears that new acquisition Glen Davis has a ways to go before he fits in with the Orlando Magic offense. After Davis made just two of his 10 shot attempts in the Magic's 103-85 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night, coach Stan Van Gundy indicated that he and Davis aren't on the same page — at least not yet. "He's not playing well, and I'm not sure his mind's on the right things right now," Van Gundy said. "What we need him to do is defend, which he has done pretty well, rebound better than he's rebounding and move the ball and set screens. "We'll keep working at it," Van Gundy added later. "I've seen the guy play very well. He's a good player. He's a smart guy. He should be able to figure it out. Sometimes it takes time."

Two of the three things Stan mentioned have never, ever, ever been strengths of Big Baby's (he was always a good screen setter).

What was he expecting?

THey traded for a less efficient version of Brandon Bass.

What did they see in him? Why did they pay him that much to "defend, set screens, move the ball, and rebound"?

Guys his size get paid that much to score. ORL is a terribly run team and I dont blame DH12 for wanting to leave. I really dont.

I think they liked Baby's ability to guard 5's and still play the 4 offensively so they could play him with or instead of Dwight.

If they expected better rebounding and ball movement, they didn't do their homework.

a major trade/steal for ainge, too bad he couldn't have signed an extension

Lil Update.. Doc and Bass´s Reactions;

"He's not picking up the defense quick? Wow," Bass said. "You know, I haven't talked to him of late, but I mean, Glen knows the situation. He's been in worse situations than that, so I feel like he'll be able to overcome it sooner than later."

C's coach Doc Rivers, who coached Davis for his first four NBA seasons, stressed the need to keep the forward motivated at all times.

"Well, you gotta keep pushing him, and finding Baby’s buttons," said Rivers. "And Stan will; Stan’s an excellent coach. It’s frustrating at times. But the one thing that Stan knows -- and I know -- that Baby is not a bad kid. He’ll find it. It’s just, then you gotta find it again. And then again. And that’s just who Baby is. At the end of the day, that’s who Baby is."

Baby is an ok player who thinks to highly of his own ability.

He owes Doc for keeping him in the NBA I don't know if he would've made it with another coach.

It shows you that some times the system makes the player. BBD was good player for the C's, people out side thought he was great, and they thought it was all him. Kg,PP,RA,RR made Baby who he was. And with his weight issues, and no KG to get on him, he may be out of the league in 5 years.

It also show how poor of a coach Vangundy is. He had Bass for how long? And didn't use him to take pressure off of Howard? Doc has him for a month and may have found out the best way to use this guy, were if he keeps it up could be the sixth man of the year.

BBD's strengths involve coming off the bench and providing energy.  I don't know why any team would ever want to make him a starter.  His best games as a C were when he was tenacious underneath the basket, grabbing boards, diving for loose balls, taking charges, etc.  he had stretches where he could be a good rebounder, but over the course of multiple games, night in and night out, i just don't see him keeping it up.

I'm in total agreement on both points. Doc and the team did nothing but put Baby in position to succeed. However, If you were to hear it from Baby he'd probably say they were hold him back and he was being undervalued by the team. Doc let him shoot and miss 15 foot jumpers for an entire season just so he could gain confidence in the shot. I can't think of many NBA coaches who'd do that.

As for Van Gundy he should've been fire years ago. He had Bass warming the bench for an entire season when he first got to Orlando. He runs a gimmick offense and has no idea on how to play a true 4 next to Howard. Baby probably isn't helping himself but I honestly don't think he ever had a chance.

it shows how selfish a player BBD is. hes making big $$ playing with his buddy Dwight, the Magic are winning games and hes still "not mentally in the right place" because he didnt get his starting job...give me a break

the thing is, I knew bass was good...but hes probably having his best season so far in boston...is it a case of Doc knowing how best to use him?

hes basically taking BBD's role but doing it better in most every aspect...and not the headcase BBD was/is

Well, I think Bass's success is twofold: he can hit the perimeter shot and he can finish in traffic.  Baby couldn't do either consistently.  Shaq proved last year how many points someone can get when they're fifth fiddle playing with the Core Four after years of watching Perk and BBD botch open two foot jumpers because they couldn't dunk with anyone within 5 feet of them (or in Perk's case, without dribbling once first).

I really think a big part of Baby's trouble is that he's now not getting the easy looks he was getting in Boston. 

It really shows just how much the Core Four can help whoever is the fifth player out there (see what happened when Greg Stiesmsa started).
