  • It's all about the TEAM!
Didn't label you any way... (I didn't even use your name did I?)  And what did I say about you making a big deal?  I didn't.

It's a discussion board, I don't see the point in saying "Why does it matter?" unless you're making some sort of judgement that the OP wants more white players or something.  Otherwise I'll just go reply "Why does it matter?" to a whole bunch of threads on here.  You aren't adding anything to the discussion, fine, just don't see the point in posting that and handing out TPs for it (unless it was a judgement that the statement of the OP was in some way racist).

I suppose you were talking about someone else? I did ask...."why does it matter." I know who you are refering to.

Something along the lines of --
P. Gasol
Nowitzki
Galinari
Ginobili
Nash

Others to consider: Parker, Bargnani, M. Gasol, M. Gortat, Scola, Turkoglu

If including non-white internationals: you also have guys like Nene, Deng, etc.

I think a lot of that is marketing though, don't you?   International basketball has gotten a lot better since I was a young man but I would say that 75% of the elite players are from the US.  Name your all international team, here is my all USA team.

Paul
Wade
Kobe
LeBron
Howard

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I have no idea, because I simply don't see race. When I look at a person I only see their true colors shining through. Their true colors, true colors, are beautiful.

EDIT: But seriously who was the best active American-born white player in the NBA before Kevin Love?

Joel Pryzbilla? Kirk Hinrich?

I don't know if the demographics changed but the talent level at the top got better.

J.A. Adande on the number of white American born players on the Lakers this year:

Intersesting read.  I liked McRoberts comments about playing AAU as the only white player and everyone expecting him to be a shooter, so he'd blow past them when they show hard on the upfake and dunk.  Shows you about the racial misconceptions in the sport right there.

Coach Mike Brown admits he's heard calls from the fans for him to play all five, but so far he has resisted. That's left World Peace as the odd man out on the court, as if Ron Artest's name change didn't make him stand out enough.

"I've never had that before," World Peace said of his teammates. "It's kind of cool."

When told that Brown has labeled him the leader of that second unit, World Peace's eyes lit up.

"Obama!" he said.

I think this is a fair topic as long as people keep it reasonable.

To be honest, this is not a black vs. white topic, which some people will inevitably try to take.  It is a white vs. white topic.  I think the real question is, why are European and South American "white" players able to make it to the NBA and have a strong impact and our white, and even latin american, players from the US tend not to make it in the same way.

Non-American Players with big impact - Dirk, Manu, Gasol Brothers, Bargnani, Nash, Scola, Rubio (perhaps), etc.

Really Kevin Love, maybe Fredette one day, are the only ones in the league right now that are in that category.  And Stiemsa is close...;).

We have plenty of solid "white" players in college but it just does not translate into the NBA.  Does this have more to do with players in other country's going pro earlier or perhaps getting more opportunities because there is less competition or are our elite white athletes going into other sports (swimming, football, volleyball, etc.).

I do know that GMs go gaga over the unknown/potential factor over the white athletes in Europe, and some of our guys get overshadowed because of this and don't even get drafted eventhough they had solid college showings.  If you miss out on getting drafted, the road to the NBA gets that much harder.  Sometimes it comes down to opportunity and GMs tend to give average international players more opportunities than american born players to play in the league and grow with other professionals.
