What do you see happening to this guy?  I'd like to revisit this thread in a year.  I mean seriously what do you anticipate happening?  Make some predictions.

Recap:

He missed his entire rookie season...

Came back in 08-09 and played a total of 61 games: 8.9 points, 7 rebounds, 1.1 block 56% shooting... 21.5 minutes

In 09-10 he played a total of 21 games:  11.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.3 blocks 60% shooting ... 23.9 minutes

Missed the entire 10-11 season...

He's also potentially going to miss the entire 11-12 season with some unspecified "set back"... good god.

Will he ever be healthy?  Is retirement a serious option?

The positive spin: He's played a total of 82 games in his career.  In all of those games, he was coming off a major injury and adjusting to NBA basketball. That excuse didn't seem to slow Blake Griffin last season... but Greg's game revolves around his "defense"... and Greg's main issue was he couldn't stay out of foul trouble (which you can chalk up to his timing and adjusting to playing on this level).  At times, Greg did in fact look pretty impressive.  Good rebounder, powerful finisher, lots of blocks.  If you look at his stats during those 82 games and project it out to a Dwight Howard-esque 37.6 minutes... Greg's numbers would look like this:  16 points, 12.4 rebounds, 2.3 blocks.  So it's safe to say there is SOMETHING there.  Oden will be 25 years old next season.  Is it too late?

Negative Spin:  He'll never play.  Might as well retire.  Career-ending injury.  Even if he plays, it's too late... he'll never have the same explosiveness and athleticism he would have had... At best, he'll float around the league like Michael Olowokandi getting multiple "last-chances" until eventually giving up before the age of 30.

What's the expectation?

I mean at some point he'll have to return right?  He's an unrestricted free agent next season.  Considering Dwight Howard is likely going to the Lakers this season... and Chris Paul and Deron Williams are likely off the market... Greg Oden could theoretically end up being the most "intriguing" unrestricted free agents available.

Or not.

I don't think they have ruled out his return this season.  What's the chances he actually comes back this season and shows some positive signs... then enters free agency with momentum?

Returns "healthy" from his injury, plays a few games, gets hurt again, finishes the season injured, falls into obscurity.

Unfortunately I think he's done. The best thing that happened to us in the last 10+ years is that the ping pong balls did not fall our way that year and we ended up with KG and Ray instead.

No expectations anymore.

I just hope he can have an NBA career at this point and isn't forced to retire ... which he is probably only another injury or two away from (forced retirement).

He never does anything, stays in the league for 10 years, and retires.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

you know... it would be kind of funny if we missed out on the Greg Oden lotto... Greg proceeds to essentially miss all 5 years of Boston's "big 3 era" of relevance...  Then Danny's first move of rebuilding the team is to sign Greg Oden.  If there's such a thing as an F-You signing, it's that.  Kinda like how Danny traded for Jeff Green as an F-You to all the fans who freaked out when he traded the #5 pick for Ray Allen.   I'd want Danny to bring in Oden just for the giggles.

And how wonderful would it be if Greg miraculously found his potential in green?  Lol
