The way things go right now, I wouldn't be amazed if Bass would eat twice as much as Baby and just work it off.

Maybe, but since there isn't a one-on-one Pro basketball league out there what does that matter at all?!

I also am not sure I agree. Bass would face him up and actually hit HIS shots. BBD has a similar scoring game as Bass, only Bass does it better. Bass also jumps much better and so even if he got backed down in the paint by BBD's girth he wouldn't score over the guy. We've all seen what BBD under the basket to a taller or better jumping player means...

I am so happy with the upgrade over BBD I can hardly stand it. Bass is a stud and much more of a complete player than BBD ever thought of being.

Mostly agree, but a couple of details:

1) As to who would win one-on-one, it's a theoretical question that is the subject of the thread, so the fact that there is no one-on-one pro league is not the point.

2) I agree Bass is far more accurate with the jumper.  Baby has been trying to develop a reliable jumper because he knows he needs it to round out his game, but that doesn't mean he will be successful.  This is a bit selfish, IMO.  The guy should have focused on what he does best and what's best for the team.  Like you said, I'm glad he's gone.

3) I too am extremely happy with this deal.  The only thing I miss about Baby was his uncanny ability to take charges.  He's one of the best in the league at that.  The question then is, what is the real value of taking a charge?  It is a lost possession for the opponent, just like a missed shot, so if Bass can hold his own defensively, then that's as good as taking a charge.  Also note that taking a charge creates a dead ball situation whereas a missed shot always creates the possibility for a fast break, which is actually better.

4) I am still in shock that ORL gave him $26mil.

It is tough to find statistics for taking charges, because very few people bother to keep track, but I was able to find a breakdown of players in the league drawing offensive fouls (which includes taking charges) in the 2007-8 season when we won the championship. Boston didn't have a single player in the top 20 in that category. Paul Pierce was the highest at 27. Jermaine O'Neal, when he was still in Indiana, was 7th in the league, and in fact this season he has been pretty good at drawing charges himself. It would seem to me to be a pretty overrated stat anyway, but even if you do care, O'Neal seems to be entirely capable of filling that niche.

EDIT: Ah I found a breakdown for the 2010-11 season, here.

Davis was 4th in the league, behind Grant Hill, JJ Barea, and Derek Fisher. If you look down the list, the distribution of players seems to be pretty random. That is, no one position is represented extremely well, and honestly there aren't that many great defensive forces on that list. While it is a smart move, it seems to be largely flukey.

West is much more well rounded player, even with his poor shooting he's productive.

Once he gets his TS% back to the mid .5xxs he'll be giving the pacers more.

West is definitely a better defender (or was pre-injury; I haven't seen him since, but it's hard to imagine he's much worse than Bass).  However, it's fairly amazing that they can be mentioned in the same conversation at this point.

I do think Bass is going to post a career year at this point. There are more defensive boards to be had and more offensive opportunities than he had available to him in Orlando. Not to mention he's now on a team with 3 talented passers and an emphasis on ball movement.

I just don't think he'll end up being better than David West.
