Completely ignorant on the entire topic. The Celtics will obviously have extra money to spend on a player since Green's contract will be voided. Can the C's buy him out from a China team?

- Celtics don't have extra money since they're over the cap even without Green's salary.

- Can't buy out Smith even if we did, he's on the books til March and the team is apparently intent on keeping him there.  And we'd only have the vet min to offer anyway.

that's the thing, this is a potentially great idea because although we can't use the 9 million from Green's deal on salary for an NBA player, we might be able to use some of it to buy out JR Smith from his Chinese deal and then sign him to the vet min for this season. I can't see Smith getting many other opportunities to come back early so it may work if the league doesn't count Smith's buyout from China against the cap, which it shouldn't.

the Chinese teams said they are open to buyouts of NBA players deals, but the price is high. I think Wyc and Co can afford it, and it's worth it.

But would the buyout bind Smith to come here?  If he could get more than the vet min elsewhere, where's the incentive?

If we bought out JR Smith from China, would he have to play for us? Would he have the option to say no?

The incentive is that I don't think there are many teams that have the money to buy him out of his chinese deal and then give him a contract well over the vet min. The celtics have the need and the means to do it with Green out and his contract voided. He would also have the chance to play a significant role for a year with an NBA contender instead of a team in china, and can raise his stock for this summer as a FA. How many other teams have 9 million extra to potentially spend on a buyout for Smith and then sign him to a deal and promise him decent playing time?
