Now, for the other side of the story.

This is it for the three stars.  This is their last chance to win a title together.  (Let's just pretend they are not going to come back together next year even though I know it is a possibility).

Time for the team to do whatever it can to be the best contender it can be this year.  That means not being afraid of trading young good players.  Not being afraid to trade draft picks.  Not being afraid of bottoming out once those three stars are gone.

Stop worrying about the future and getting back to this point once the stars are gone.  The Celtics are at this point now and need to take advantage of it now.  Straddling the fence leads to your legs getting kicked out from under you and landing really hard where you do not want to land.

  • Rondo = Good
If Green is a no-go this year, I'm gonna keep pushing this trade:

Rondo + Bass + JO + BOS 2012 1st Round Pick

for

Nash + Dudley + Gortat

Makes sense for both teams.  We could even sweeten it by throwing in Avery Bradley and taking back Shannon Brown.

Win now, rebuild after this season is over, and we'd have two quality young players on reasonable contracts moving forward (easy to trade or keep).

Disagree with this in every way possible . They are not winning the championship this season. They weren't going to do it with Jeff Green and David West, they certainly aren't going to without them.

They have no reliable healthy center, JO will play 35 games at most. Daniels gets hurt every year. That leaves us with a bench of Dooling, Bradley, Bass and Wilcox......

What exactly would trading our young players accomplish? They have no trade value besides Rondo and he could only get back a package of Collison , Rush and Hansborough.

Rondo has a lot more value as a player than a trade asset, so you have to build around Rondo pretty much.

Amen!

Don't anyone worry, this team will be blown up at some point.  But, be careful what you wish for.  No one is out there clambering for our players right now, so lets just give it one more go, shall we?

If we fall short, fine, we blow it up over the summer.

If things fall apart early in the season, fine, Danny has the trade deadline, and next summer, and beyond to rebuild the team.

But, right now, its all about hope.  So, lets not ruin that until we at least lose a game or two.

I am sure there were those in Dallas before last year say similar things about that team being to old.

But, be careful what you wish for.

No kidding.  I don't think a lot of fans remember how much rooting for Gerald Green sucked.  Rebuilding wasn't fun.  Rooting for the Celtics to lose games for "lottery position" wasn't fun.  Having the Laker and our other rivals routinely trounce us wasn't fun.

Losing sucks.  Why invite more of it, when we can at least have another season of quality basketball?

that's why we need a trade that will put us in a better position to rebuild but also still allow us to be a complete / competitive team this season.   :)

And this is not a team that never did anything.

We are not blowing up the Wizards of this decade.

They deserve the chance to ride once again and challenge because they are still good enough.

matter of opinion . . . depends on whether you think Rondo is a player to build around or not, and whether you think we'd bottom out sufficiently with Rondo still on the team.

  Or, really, to win now.

im not saying my proposed trade would make the team better right now (though i think we'd have a more balanced / complete roster with a legit starting center and a solid backup wing).  rather, it would set us up to rebuild immediately after this season while still allowing the celtics to stay relevant (read: more or less as competitive as they would be without Green).

in that trade, we might even be able to get the suns to swap 1st round picks with us this year; since their's is likely to be a lottery pick, that would really aid in the rebuild.

If you're going to rebuild you should get assets for Rondo to rebuild with. Your trade doesn't do that.

If you're going to win now and feel trading Rondo can get you better "win now" pieces that's a separate goal and trade. You trade is an attempt to do that.

If you want to "bottom out" the roster you can always just amnesty Rondo after this year, I think he has enough value to get you some picks and prospects but some people here are overreacting to NOH not being interested in him.

I think people overrate bottoming out, if the only goal is to lose games you can just sign a bunch of awful d-leaguers. When you rebuild you're actually trying to develop and acquire young players who eventually will help you win either as trade assets or rotation pieces. Rondo is young, an all-star, and a very good player. It is foolish to view him as an obstacle to rebuilding.

the trade is more an attempt to win-now, yes, but we also get two starter-quality role players on reasonable deals that we could keep or move.

gortat and dudley are useful in that they won't win a team any games on their own, but they are quality pieces on a team with talent.

we also could probably squeeze PHX for their 1st rounder, which is likely to be a mid to late lotto pick.

i view rondo as an obstacle to rebuilding mainly because i think he's the sort of player who could turn a group of role players into a 30-40 win team.  that is a credit to him, but it's also an impediment to rebuilding if you want to become a 50-60 win team.

for rondo to lead a 50-60 win team you need to give him all-star level scorers, and you won't get those in boston unless you bottom out and draft them, pay free agents way too much money, or use cap space to trade for players that other teams overpaid.

Rajon Rondo is more valuable than all of those assets you refer to as he's a high level young player on affordable deal. Those sort of players are hard to find.

Your idea doesn't tie up cap space or leave us with any bad players/contracts to shed like most win now moves. But it doesn't leave us better off than we would be with Rondo.

The idea that Rondo's too good for us to get draft picks to put a contender around him is silly. There are other ways of acquiring players than just high lottery picks. Better to try and build around Rondo first, rather than give him up and hope you get kind ping pong balls.

If you are going to trade him, it should be a draft day type of trade. Be certain what sort of prospect you're getting for him.
