The smile on Marquis Daniels’ face belies what he went through to have a lifelong neurological condition rectified this summer through surgery.

“They shaved down a couple of vertebrae and they cut through my spine and put in three screws and a sling,” he said. “They widened it up. The surgery took two or three hours. I know they had to give me a double dosage of whatever the medicine was. When they put me under I was fighting it. My tongue was bleeding because I was biting it, but they said that’s all right.”

Yeah he went through tough times, I'm glad he is OK now.

What's interesting is that he found out after getting the surgery that some of his previous injuries (his thumb for example) were related to his spinal problems. According to doctors, now his body will be less "fragile" so (knock on wood) he shouldn't get injured as easily/often as before.

Wow, that's good news indeed, if true. Hope so, for his sake. He's one of the more solid role-players in the league, love his game.

Btw, the surgery talk makes me feel a bit queasy, no pun intended.

Doc discussed MD at length on Friday, the first day of camp.

What he said was pretty cool and shows why Doc is one of the most liked coach's from the players perspective.

Doc said that having discussed the surgery with Marquis and his family, Doc cautioned him against it and told MD that he could come and work next to Doc on the bench (pretty cool)and that the risks of the surgery may not be worth it and that his health and family were more important.

Doc said that Marquis decided to have the surgery and was intent on making it all the way back with intensive rehab and strengthening.

What he said next was cool. He said Marquis now is stronger and healthier than he has ever been. And he kept saying (and you could tell that he was emotional about it) "It's a miracle...No, really...it's a miracle."

Coachspeak? maybe. Hope for the future?..definitely!!

Yes but. He should have rehabilitation time as player. Hopefully he will be close to his best condition in playoff time but for sure not at the beginning of season

first and foremost, good for marquis and his family. it means his life and health are better.

second, good for the celtics that marquis might be able to stay healthy and play even better. i liked him on the celtics before. i thought his defense, team play, ball movement were positives. his scoring was not important and he was willing to give up points to help the team.

if he stays healthy, then he can help lead a bench with green, bass, and dooling. depth is going to be very important this season for the celtics given the age of the big 3 and the large number of back-to-back games they must play. (something in the area of 20 back-to-backs i think.)
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

It's amazing to think of a guy becoming a great enough athlete to make it to the NBA with the sort of condition 'Quis had.

Another hopeful point is that while the Big 3 were relatively healthy last season, the rest of the team was triage unit.  Shaq, JO, Delonte, Rondo, 'Quis and even Wafer and Semih had injury issues.  JO might still be fragile, but maybe if 'Quis and the new guys can stay healthy that might go a long way to giving this team a real shot at 18.

I guess it had to do with numbness in his extremities related to the neurological condition.

Great feel-good article about it here.
