But I honestly can't see my beloved Celtics getting very far this season with their current roster.

I was ecstatic about getting Brandon Bass (who in my opinion is miles ahead of the immensely dissapointing Glen Davis) but then later today I hear that the David West trade had fallen through and we signed the mighty Pavlovich... Talk about a buzz kill.

The sad truth is that we're stuck with a very weak center position (a constantly injured JO Neal and a D leaguer) and sadly it's probably the best Boston can do right now. Yes the trading period isn't done yet, but do any of you truly expect anything truly exceptional to happen?

I wasn't expecting too much this season now that the Big 3 are 1 year older, Rondo still seems to have lingering injury problems, and with so many back to backs in this shortended season (which the Celtics were HORRIBLE at last season).

But I truly feel dissapointed that the Big 3 can't get a better supporting cast for their last hurrah. They are old and tired, and can't carry the load alone anymore like they used to.

The Big 3 were EXTREMELY unlucky with injuries and deserved at least 1 more title. I'm just sad that it seems like they will go out in their last year with a whimper rather than a bang. Instead they will more likely be a blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things.

I hope they all prove me dead wrong, but considering what I saw last season I won't be betting any money on it.

Anyone else agree/disagree? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Celtics' turn on switch for the playoffs: the last bastion of hope for battered Celtic fans.

We're in a much better position to succeed this year than last year.

i think having JO as the starter at center is really bad. he is most likely to get injured quickly..

-daniels is coming off a spinal cord injury..before this he couldn't stay healthy

-really no #2 center on this team

-no back up to ray at SG..don't feel comfortable thinking avery bradley can fill that role let or any role on this team

-west was better than dooling

-sasha? please..scrub

-2 rookies that most likely won't play

-i do like bass, wilcox and green

Already?!? We haven't even played a single game yet.

If we can land someone like Kenyon Martin or JR Smith before the trade deadline and they play really well you never know what could happen we aren't done making moves yet.

I think how far we go this season is how well the Big Three can play but moreover Rondo hes got to make some huge strides. Also we would have to have a huge breakout year from Green (possible given he's playing on a contract year) and the bench would have to gel and be really solid. It would take luck as well a key injury to one of our eastern conference foes Miami, Knicks etc like it happened to us with Rondo last year.

Look at Dallas last season no one had them even getting near the Finals let alone winning, they did it with heart and teamwork as a unit.

I wasn't expecting a title run over the summer and I haven't seen anything since then to change that.  We have a solid core with some young pieces and cap space developing - we have a chance to transition smoothly to our next incarnation without too much bottoming out.  I'll take it, and try to enjoy the Big 3 while they're still around.

But barring some major moves down the road, this feels like a tough second-round out to me, if healthy - Conference Finals at best.  If not, first-round flameout.

I would never count this unit out. No one wants to see us at full strength in the playoffs. I think the David West trade failing has a lot to do with this pessimism. Let's see what our roster looks like come playoff time. Last year should be a reminder of that, what we have now could look completely different in a few months.

And an unstoppable force in Dirk. We don't have that kind of guy on our roster, so I can't agree with the comparison.

I think the offseason is going as well as can be expected.

He has made the upgrades that are there while swinging for the fences on other moves.

He can't force the other teams to accept the best offers the Celtics have.

I went into the season assuming the Celtics would probably have the third-best chance to win the title out of the east and maybe sixth-best overall.  This team was never going to be improved to the point that pundits declare the Celtics to be at least co-favorites with the Heat to make the NBA Finals.  That's not a bad spot to be in.  I like Ainge being willing to take risks because there is no safe way to improve this team, but I don't want him to take stupid risks.

This is a team that is a bit of a long-shot title contender, but still a contender.  To get there, they probably need someone other than Rondo, KG, Pierce, and Allen to over-achieve, perhaps even over-achieve.

A healthy Jermaine O'Neal in the playoffs (and some people think he does better in the last year of a contract) makes this team dangerous.  It's about as reasonable to expect JO to be a contributor as it is to rely on Delonte West to be healthy.

My thoughts are similar to yours.  Btw, whatever happened to Chris Johnson?  He came in on a 10 day contract last year when Perk was traded and brought lots of energy.  Couldn't he be the kind of guy who could fill out a roster?

Signed by the Blazers last season.  There are always a few guys like him hanging around on the fringe who can play in the NBA.  I really think the Celtics should be looking for one of those shot-blocking energy bigs who have the height to play center but lack the bulk to wrestle with traditional centers in the post so that they end up as tweener C/PFs.

I second that - happy with what Danny's done.  Just don't think we've got the horses to win a ring at this point.  But both this year and broadly he's put us in as good a position as we could hope for.
