odom gone means the lakers' 21 feet is down to 14.  sounds good to me.

This seems like an incredibly stupid move.  Odom is pretty much the piece the Lakers HAD to include in any big trade to make it at all palatable to the other team.  Shipping him out for one pick, and a pick from Dallas at that, would seem to cripple their trade potential.  I mean, who thinks Cuban will ever allow Dallas to suck bad enough for that pick to be all that valuable?

I think I read that the pick can never go below 20...so it's not a great trade chip either.

given that this is LA, i doubt they are done dealing and are positioning themselves for a big name star.

it may not be paul, but i think they are now aiming at howard. a package of gasol, bynum, and whomever might bring back howard and some stocking stuffers.

things are exciting these days arent they?  ;D

Odom requested the trade because he was butthurt that the Lakers wanted to trade him.

I think dallas is slowly putting together a solid/deep team. they could definitely make it out of the west again

Kidd/Carter/Odom/Dirk/Haywood with marion/terry coming off the bench. also rumors they are looking at dalembert and Billups

The Lakers should have refused Odom's request and let some time pass. Repair the broken relationship.

It wouldn't have been a difficult situation to fix.

Odom isn't well suited for the SF postion anymore. I expect him to come off the bench but still see significant minutes. I think their starting five will be Kidd, Carter, Marion, Dirk and Haywood....and Kidd, Terry, Marion, Dirk and Odom will close out games.

mavs will be one of the best teams in the west again but i don't think they'll be better, ultimately, than the Thunder.

Thunder got to the WCFs last season and have not made any changes, and more time together means more time to mesh, and more time for Westbrook to realize that he needs to pass to Durant to close out games.  The Mavericks have made some pretty big changes, but we have yet to see how they play out.  I believe the Thunder will at least make the WCF's this year, but the other team is up in the air.  Mavs and Lakers are question marks going into the season with roster and personnel changes.  But the Grizzlies seem like they could make a serious push to the WCF's with the core squad back, Rudy Gay instead of Battier, and potentially Rush and McRoberts in the place of Mayo (who has not been a part of their plans for a while now).

How do you figure Rudy Fernandez fits into the rotation? I see him as being better than Carter at this point in their careers, and I would rather start him and have Vinsanity, well, get some minutes if he proves that he cares.

i think the grizz will be up there, but not in the top 3.  let's remember they were still only an 8 seed going into the playoffs last year and battier was a very important leader / glue guy for them.  they'll be good, but i think they'll end up in about the same place as they were last year -- a tough opponent for an eventual western conference championship team.

unless they make a trade, I think the Mavs are better than the lakers this season.

who plays center when bynum goes down? who have the lakers even signed actually?

I agree that they may be in the same position as last season.  A lot of their success this season  hinges on Rudy Gay's recovery.  It was said that Memphis needed to add an elite scorer, and Gay is just that.  I am a person who believes that Shane Battier is one of the smartest and most effective players in the league, with his under-the-radar non-statistical all-star abilities.  However, they have a great starter at every position with some great bench players, as well as players with potential.

PG- Conley, Vasquez, Smith
SG- Henry, Rush, Selby
SF- Gay, Allen
PF- Randolph, Arthur, McRoberts
C- Gasol, Haddadi

I like them particularly because they are a small market team whose management has played it very smart since making the lopsided Pau trade.  And Tony Allen has found great success there.

Although they've apparently invited Mikki Moore to training camp.

I take back everything I've said.

Wow.

Looks like our bench is stronger than LA's at least.

Any time Kobe is unhappy, that is a good thing.

Crazy pre-season so far.
