Doc tends to not give rookies any real playing time

I wonder if that will change with this shortened season and the increased back to backs.

JJJ and Moore having excellent breakout years would be fantastic news for the Celtics.

Doubtful they see more than 10 mins per game even with this unholy schedule-- we have a lot of depth at PF

Glen Davis disagrees, as does Rondo, Leon Powe, Mike Miller, and a ton of other rookies who can play.

He tends not to give playing time to rookies who suck.

Hope you're right, because Avery Bradley was supposed to be the next big thing and he got no playing time at all (so I'm assuming he sucks lol).

Avery Bradley's play in what limited minutes he got and in the D-League didn't show he could contribute. He might be a player in a few years, but right now he does "suck" as a rotation player.

Unless he's made a massive leap he's not going to help us, but he's very young much younger than JJJ.

Absolutes are fun to say, and even more fun to show completely 100% false! Doc has played rookies in the past, and played them in large and small roles.

When rookies have shown they can produce, he plays them. He'll also play them when injuries force his hand or when they outperform other veterans (like Leon Powe, Davis got the nod over him due to superior defense in 07-08 many times)

i can think of 1 rookie getting PT under doc..that was baby. i highly doubt johnson nor moore get any run..even though I think moore is the best option to back up ray and johnson could stretch the floor from the PF spot

I linked to three rookies. He also gave Pat Burke, Orien Greene, Ryan Gomes, Leon Powe, and Rajon Rondo playing time.

I agree with your general line of reasoning, but I'm actually somewhat optimistic regarding Bradley this year after hearing a recent Doc interview.  Doc recognized that Bradley was paralyzed by the responsibilities of running the point.  Doc said he was going to treat him as a pure 2, and that Dooling's ability to handle the ball and guard either the 1 or 2 would be big in helping Bradley get on the floor.  I think Bradley will be a much different player if he's allowed to play the 2 on offense.  He showed in college and his stint in the D-league that he can shoot the 3-ball (38% in college, 37% in the D-league), and hit jump shots off of screens, and he's shown tremendous defensive potential at every level.  What stood out his rookie year was his complete inability to create good looks for himself or others off the dribble.  Once that expectation is removed and he's allowed to play his natural position, I think we might see a quality 2-way player emerge.

As for JJ, my expectations are modest.  Defending the pick and roll every possession, denying post position, rotating inside and out instead of just hanging out by the rim and blocking shots: I think this adjustment will be painful.  He showed a disproportionate interest on the offensive side of the ball his senior year. He's going to have to completely remake himself as a defense-first player to make up for the fact that his offensive skill-set (nice mid-range jumper, length to shoot over/around smaller defenders) is not all that exceptional in the NBA.  Certainly not enough to make up for below-average rebounding and defense.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

To be fair Avery did not play in a summer league last year, and got a late start to training camp because of ankle surgery (1 reason why he slipped in the draft).   Also factor in being a very young rookie with Delonte West ahead of him, I can see why he wasn't given any rotation minutes.

It may still be too early to count on him for anything this year, but I haven't given up hope yet.

Major distinction between AB and JJJ/Moore is that the Purdue tandem are 4 year college players. More experience more maturity and more basketball knowledge. They are both reputed to be very coachable players.

For those reasons, I think Doc will play them if they play D.

NBA GMs tend to draft younger players because they view them as having more upside. Almost as if, by definition, 4 year college players don't have any.

At some point this season JJ will be pressed into action, at least he has shown in the college ranks that he can, 1.defend 2. hit open jumpers 3 run the floor. These three things (and back to back to back games) and learning from doc and the vets will get him minutes this year.
