to me the difference is that louis scola is not at the end of his career, nor is he at the end of his contract. he likely would not be willing to give up all of the money he'd get on his contract and play on a good team instead. billups likely would.
i think a vet like billups, on the last year of his deal, should be able to play where he wants assuming he's willing to give up all the money on the last year of his deal and sign for no more than the veteran minimum anywhere else.

It's not bizarre. Chauncey didnt want to leave Denver. He wanted to move into a front office position there and keep his family in Denver. The only reason why he went to NY, was that he was promised a chance to end his career on a contender. Now that he moved (due to that promise), he's likely to be sent to a junk team (the teams who have 1st pick of amnesty players). Basically, the exact opposite of the promise he was given.
The situation with big al, rubio, scola, etc, isnt the same, because they probably didnt move their family because they were promised theyd be playing for a contender. Thats the whole issue.
Why the heck didn't he want to move from Denver? Was he also promised by Denver that they wouldn't move him? If the only reason he moved to NY was that he was promised this or that, what would he have done if he wasn't promised anything? Refused to go to New York and opt for retirement instead? In that case, do that now.
Well, most of your questions are answered in the post you quoted. He didnt want to move from Denver, because 1.- he didnt want to uproot his family, 2.- He was interested in pursuing a job in the Denver front office, 3.-He didnt want to end up on a rebuilding team in his last few years in the league.
Denver didnt have to promise him anything. He was going to arrange for his contract in Denver to be bought out if they traded him. The only reason he didnt buy out his contract in Denver, become a free agent, and sign where he wanted to then, was because the Knicks promised he could end his career competing for a title in NY.
If NY never promised him anything, he either would have 1.- retired in Denver, never had his family move from his hometown, and taken up a front office position in denver, or 2.- become a free agent, and chosen exactly where he wanted to play. He made it VERY clear before leaving Denver, that he wanted to end his career on his own terms. NY promised that he could do that there...then they turned around and shipped him out.
Really, I dont even see how he is hurting anyone here. The only teams he's issuing a warning to, are bottom feeder junk teams, and those teams would never have even had a shot at getting him anyway had he not been amnestied. If he bought out his contract in Denver, he certainly wouldnt have chosen to play for them. Theyre losing an opportunity to get a player that they never could have gotten anyway.
