Celtics Sign Greg Stiemsma
BOSTON – The Boston Celtics today announced that they have signed free agent center Greg Stiemsma. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed. Stiemsma, a 6'11"" center, last played for the Sioux Fall Sky Force of the NBA Development League. He appeared in four games for the Sky Force averaging 9.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game. He was named the 2010 NBA Development League Defensive Player of the Year after he averaged 9.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and a league-leading 3.7 blocks per game for Sioux Falls.

Hmmm I know I'm thinking the same, who?!

My guess is that it's a non-guaranteed, training camp contract.  Who knows, though, I guess.  I'm hoping for better.

  • Rondo = Good
i'd be surprised if it's anything more than an unguaranteed training camp deal at this point

The team needs a big body third string center. Someone with a bit of heft. Maybe Eric Dampier.

They already have enough quick mobile big men.

thanks for the video. tp. the guy looked as if he might be able to play some defense. the question for me is how tough he is under the basket. i dont think he will make a living off his offense. but rebounding...maybe.

defense will be crucial for him to get any minutes from doc. and the celtics need a physical player down low.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

A defensive center.  Yes please. :)
I don't care about his offensive ability.
Just be tough on defense and don't allow any layup drills!

I love how, even though we've made a ton of other moves.. I still find this exciting.

Mr. Stiemsma, or the "Vanilla Gorilla" is a D-League call up, but not just any old D-League player.

Stiemsma appeared in 45 games, 44 starts, for Sioux Falls during the regular season, averaging 8.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and an NBA D-League-best 3.6 blocks. He scored in double figures 24 times, recording 11 double-doubles and one triple-double, when he scored 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked 10 shots in a 107-105 victory over the Springfield Armor in Sioux Falls.

Some of his better games:

24 points, 10 rebounds, 8 blocks VS. TUL
23 points, 13 rebounds, 7 blocks VS. BAK
20 points, 14 rebounds, 10 blocks VS. SPG
15 points, 14 rebounds, 7 blocks VS. DAK

The guy is a blocking machine, however you want to chop it up.

Looking at some footage, there are some good things I've noticed:

A true center, a big body, a defensive specialist, and will fit next to a great post power forward post presence.

Alters an incredible number of shots if they aren't blocked.

Knows his role, doesn't play outside of his skill set.

Decent lateral quickness, very mobile, can run the floor very well.

Relentless and powerful.

High energy/intensity and intimidation, plays with passion.

Now for the bad:

His reflexes are slow, so Pau Gasol or Al Jefferson would score on him one on one, so a weakside shot blocker would be ideal.

Gets in foul trouble

A complete offensive liability.

Developing basketball I.Q, much a work in progress but has made strides since his days in college.

His upside? Joakim Noah.

Oh man I remember his days at Wisconsin...man was he bad on the offensive side of the ball.  He's a typical example of "you can't teach height."  Was always a hard worker though.  I'm thinking this is just a training camp thing but who knows.

His numbers at Wisconsin were nothing for a 6'11" guy.  I take it he's really improved to be where he is now three years later.  Was he scrawny then or something?  Late to playing the game?  From a tiny high school in nowhere?
