Tayshaun Prince(notes) will sign a four-year, $27 million-plus contract to stay with the Detroit Pistons, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Maybe a little too much.

Jerebko will be back for a $16-million, four-year deal. He is a restricted free agent.

Why would either party want each other long term?

Is Prince happy with his one championship?

I thought Detroit should have let him go.

Financially, for Prince, I have to imagine that was the best he could do in this free agent climate. Not a lot of teams looking to burn cap space on a non-scoring SF. I expect the only offers he was getting where for the MLE. So he made an extra $5 million over four years to stay with Detroit.

It might have been worth giving up that $5 million to go somewhere that offers a bit of stability and an opportunity for a Championship. A lot of upheaval still to come out in Detroit. Who knows how that shakes out for Prince.

That all said, I am not sure what team offered that security to Prince. San Antonio offers it this season but not for the duration of his contract. Pretty much everyone else is offering him a bench role playing 20-24 minutes a night. I don't begrudge the man wanting to play 30-35 minutes a game while he is still physically able to.

Oh, maybe Tayshaun should have considered a position change. Switch to the two spot. He could taken over the starting gig in Chicago or Oklahoma. Been a veteran leader with title experience. Have a nice gig for the next 4 years and possibly longer in a reserve role. That would have been my first choice route if I had of been in his shoes.

A four year $27 million ($6.75mil per year) is a fine contract for a player of his abilities. Value wise (financially), it's a good deal. In other words, they should be able to trade him at a later date if in the best interests of the club.

Not a great fit for team or player. Likely only happened due a shortage of alternatives (for both team and player).

That Jerebko contract is pricey. They are paying quite a bit for potential.

He hadn't shown himself to be anything more than an 8th or 9th man utility player before his injury.

If Detroit lost Prince in free agency, the Pistons would have taken a huge hit at the gate. Prince is probably their most popular player. I think it's a fine deal for both sides.

The Jerebko signing does seem a bit pricey, considering he's not played since that Achilles injury. Who knows, maybe he makes that deal look good this season.

Lots of glowing reports about how he has looked in scrimmages over the last few weeks and months.

Apparently added a lot of bulk to his frame. Hopefully enough to further improve his defense at the four spot. He was over-matched physically too often as a starting PF for my comfort. Also worked hard on his guard skills (ball-handling, passing) and jump shot.

So it should work out quite well. Pricey as it is.

The Pistons are going nowhere, but I like Prince, and I'd value Jerebko's potential around $4 mil per.  Better sign them than lose them for nothing.
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

I don't these contracts are bad ones, but the lack of overall direction for Detroit makes me think he's just marking time with them.

I don't begrudge Prince taking the money from the only team he has ever played for and possibly in a market he and his family, if he has one, is comfortable with. He's won a ring and had that championship run.

Now he can maximize his money to set him up for life. Its real easy for us to say don't take that extra $5-7 million and go sign with someone to win a ring, but he has a ring and has done the whole experience of being on a contender for half a decade. Take the money and run now. Take care of the family.

As for Dumars, he is becoming financially more irresponsible and stupid with each contract he signs a player to.

I expect a greater sense of direction from Dumars this year, now that there is a new owner (Gores) with deep pockets and a desire to make the team relevant again.

I also think that the Prince signing presages an amnesty buyout for one of the Pistons' big contracts. Who has advocated for Villanueva (net detriment to the team), while I think it might be Ben Gordon (more money). It could even be Rip.

I think teams will trade for Ben Gordon/Rip, not so with Charlie V.

Detroit continues to make wise free agency decisions.  :P

I understand that they need players, but tying up mediocre players in long term contracts isn't going to help their rebuilding effort.
