Ok, so we trade Rajon Rondo for Chris Paul. Now, on paper, we are maybe in a slightly better situation than if we had just kept Rondo. BUT, this leaves the team with the exact same problem they have if they don't trade Rondo for Chris Paul- after this season we are most likely not gonna be a very good team with the remaining roster. For the life of me I can not imagine what Danny Ainge thinks he would be accomplishing by trading Rajon, a true Celtic, for an arguably slightly better point guard, whilst not addressing the other huge roster issues at all.

If Rajon Rondo really must be traded then the obvious best way to trade him is to trade him for at least two (prefferably 3) up and coming, talented, young players.

Trading Rondo for Chris Paul is flat out bad GMing considering our current situation.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
You should look at our cap situation after this season. Especially if we amnesty Paul pierce when the big 3 retire. Not saying it's the only option, but if we acquire Chris Paul, and Howard really wants to play with him that bad, we can offer the laundry.

for an arguably slightly better point guard,

This is a huge point of disagreement.  You, and others like Tim, say "arguably slightly better" while I and others say "inarguably better by quite a bit".

It's kind of like comparing Lebron to Pierce in my opinion.

You could also make the case that adding another scorer and upgrading using our one main asset would work in our favor. You could also argue that after this year Rondo wouldn't fit into this team anyways, if they win and Paul is the difference maker then the deal is a very good one. If not...you can also sign and trade him, or convince him to stay by signing another max free agent since the Celtics can offer Chris Paul more than anyone in the league. Its a risk worth taking.

If you trade Rondo for two up and coming players, you are rolling the dice on an unknown, but appeasing the certain Celtics crowd that doesn't care if they are the 8th seed every year just as long as the roster is under 24, young and exciting. The crowd that always is looking towards blowing it up and rebuilding. If you trade Rondo, you do it for the all star...anything else is unacceptable.

Sure, but those guys aern't enough to keep us championchip contenders. Think about it- if Danny doesn't get some younger talented dudes soon, when KG and Paul are gone we could sink to a not so great team.

I personally feel like everyone is expierenceing and "don't know what you got til its gone" thing right now> Everyone is hearing "Chris Paul, Chris Paul", but I really don't think he would change this team for the better that much. people are just all on the bandwagon cause hes a particularly famous player. Rondo is just as good, he just doesn;t chill with Lebron James.

IP, this is something I thought of in great depth last night - amnesty Pierce.  Heresy on this board, but could taking on some contracts and being willing to offer long term money to a few free agents really boost our chances in getting Dwight?

I was thinking something like:
Re-sign BBD for multiple years
Use whatever MLE/mini-MLE we have on the best available free agent (JR Smith, Carl Landry, Chuck Hayes, etc.)
Get Ariza in the deal for CP (this would further entice NO)

Then we amnesty Pierce and we have a core of:
CP, Ariza, BBD, decent '11 free agent, bird rights for Ray and KG to lure Dwight.  It think this is more enticing than simply CP, an aging Pierce, and bird rights for Ray and KG.  And I think (?) we'd still have some money left over in summer '12 to spend on another FA too?

Also, being able to freely spend and acquire this season would improve our chances of a title this season, which would further entice CP and Dwight to come here if we could win it.

Well, between Lebron and Paul, we have seen who comes up big in the finals.
What I know is that Rajon is the best passing point guard in the league, and Chris Paul has knee problems. Unless were talking about how Dwight Howard/ Chris Paul have man crushes on each other, I do not wanna trade Rajon.
Also, I really don't wanna become one of these teams who just accumulates members of the lebron crew (Chris Paul, Dwayne Wade, etc.). I like having our own brought up talent.

I wouldn't say Rondo is the best passing pg in the league.  Nash first.  I'm not even sure Rondo is a better passer than CP.  I already know I'm going to get some disagreement here, but that's how I feel.

Rondo is groomed to be great.  He learned the point guard position from Doc, passion and intensity from KG, discipline from Ray, and a get-it-done mentality from Pierce.  Physically he's more gifted than Paul with his speed.  This kid is destined for greatness.  While it is undeniably true that Paul is a better player than Rondo, Rondo's not anywhere near his full potential.  I have no doubt in 2 years Rondo will be a better player than Chris Paul.
