the thing that doesnt sit right with me, is that while CP3 may be better than Rondo, to me Rajon Rondo is a celtic through and through...how he lead us through the cavs to the finals in 10, came back from his arm injury to spur us against the Heat in that victory...the kid IS a celtic..we watched him evolve and mature from when he was drafted to now..

CP3 isnt....hes admitted hed rather play with Carmelo or on the Lakers than the celtics...hes never a player I really liked as a person.

idk, maybe its me but a celtics team put together like the Miami Heat or the Knicks just doesnt sit well with me.

its the same way that Paul Pierce isnt the greatest SF in the game, but hes a celtic and I wouldnt want to see him go in the world.

I know danny is all for bold trades, but IMO this isnt NBA 2k12 where you can plug and play players and say "oh rondo is an 85, cp3 is a 92" this is a team with chemistry, one whom the big 3 state that Rondo is the "straw that stirs the drink."

we saw how much the trade of Kendrick perkins affected chemistry in the locker-room...imagine trading Rajon Rondo.

if we trade for paul and he books after this season, or gets injured(the guy has no cartilage in his knees) this could go down as the worst trade in boston sports..(although Joe thorton trade was pretty bad)

I agree with your sentiment, but to be fair it's not a stretch to compare the championship Celtics team to how the Knicks and Heat were put together - if anything, the Heat have talked about how they modeled their system around the Celtics' success.
2023 Historical Draft: Toronto Raptors

Point Guard: Anfernee Hardaway, Fat Lever, Terrell Brandon
Shooting Guard: Paul Westphal, Paul Pressey
Small Forward: Marques Johnson, Danny Granger
Power Forward: Jermaine O'Neal, Bobby Jones, Kiki Vandeweghe
Center: Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka

Wasn't the Big Three put together through trades? KG was T-Wolf and Allen a Sonic and Buck before coming here. The only difference here is that you now like KG and Ray and don't like Chris Paul.

Yeah.  Delonte West was a true Celtic.  Kendrick Perkins was a true Celtic.  Ryan Gomes was a true Celtic.  Leon Powe was a true Celtic.

All those guys have come and gone, with various support from the fan base.  If Rondo gets traded for an upgrade and it results in a title, Danny should be applauded.

if CP3 has no desire to stay in boston and books it after the season....what good did it do? we are left with nothing.

giving up Rondo, Green and 2 #1's for a "chance" that paul a guy who averaged 5more ppg than rondo and has 2 bum knees..may stay with you after is pretty big betting

danny is putting the celtics future on the line for one player a point guard...

As much as I look over clips of CP3 and Rondo, I have to agree I'm a bit torn.

There is so much to consider here, and most of it has been discussed already.

I guess that I am too sentimental for what Rondo has done here, too. I watched in amazement as Rondo (and Perk) stepped up in 08-09 playoffs (minus KG and Powe).

I watched CLE and Lebron trying to adjust to Rondo in 09-10 playoffs - to no avail. I watched Rondo become so much of a worry to CLE that Lebron threatened to guard him himself in the next game.

I watched Rondo dive for that looseball in the ORL series - right between Jason William's legs. Hustle.

I also watched CP3 nearly beat LA last season - by himself. No one could stop him, and he only became guardable when it appeared as if he was tired. I watched how he seemingly paralyzed LA.

CP3 has a very good team in NOH - but man I wonder what he'd do with Ray, KG and Paul? Would he hustle? Would I even want him to - with his past knee condition?

Just honest thoughts, here.

To me, there are just too many memories with Rondo in Green....I'll never forget Mark Jackson comparing Rondo's play to Bird at one time during that ORL series.

With the latest trade proposal that I saw tossed around - I would NOT give up drafts picks, Rondo and Jeff Green for CP3....nope.

That is IMO utterly disrespectful of Rondo.

It would seem to me that the content of the original post contradicts the title. You mention that you feel fans are just rooting for the uniform.

Yet, you mention how much you like Rondo because he's shown how "true" of a Celtic he is.

So do you prefer Rondo over Paul because he's a better player or because of the uniform that Rondo is wearing?

Look, I understand everyone has their opinion. Certainly there seems to be alot of sentiment towards Rondo and I guess I can understand why.

However, it would appear your letting sentimental value get in the way of good judgement.

And I almost sort of get what you mean about CP3. He does kinda seem like someone who's more concerned about being a star rather than a player.

All that said, I would STILL rather have Chris Paul. The career numbers don't lie. Paul is better than Rondo, which equates to a better chance of winning a championship.

I would rather be bold and make the controversial trades, rather than let nostalgia cloud judgement to the point where Celtics become the toilet of the NBA.

Remember, there was a very similar debate between Al Jefferson and KG a few years ago. How did that work out?

Since I can't speak for all of you, here's what I root for:

1) Basketball

2) The Celtics

3) Individual players

First and foremost, I love basketball. This game *has* me, and I will always defend my statement that basketball is the most fun sport to watch, follow and play.

Secondly there's the Celtics, but since that's the answer to your question, I'll talk about this last.

Thirdly, there's individual players that I root for. Dwyane Wade, Steve Nash, Joachim Noah, there's a whole bunch of players that I love to watch, as well as a lot that I hate to watch (Manu G, Paul G, etc) and I can definitely root for them at times.

So, about the Celtics... when I root for the Celtics, I root for a history of team-play, Ubuntu, for hard work, gritty defense and unselfishness. I root for Bird, Cousy, Russell, the spirits of those who used to be great. I root for 17 banners and counting, I root for James Posey, Powe, Cassell and all the other 'fringe' players that helped us get there. I root for an elite society, a dynasty, a green force.

So, yeah, I root for the Celtics.

Hmmm, how is trading Rondo being disrespectful? That's part of the game. If Rondo ever bother to develop a jump shot, maybe this conversation wouldn't be happening.

Okay, so let's just imagine this then: Let's imagine that Delonte West is our point guard in 2007-08. Let's say the Celtics gave up Rondo to get Ray Allen instead of DWest and gave up Perkins instead of Al Jefferson to get KG, and Al Jefferson was our starting center in 2007-08.

Does that team still not win an NBA title? Is it really fair to say that without Rondo, the Celts don't win a title? I don't think it is.

Yeah - but giving up THAT much (Rondo, Jeff, AND draft picks)? So is NOH trying to pry that Clips pick off of us, too?

I love the Celtics too much to see them get low-balled here. I just don't want to see Boston get fleeced.

CP3 is an incredible player, but he's no Hakeem Olajuwon (even though the kid has his footwork).
