While the deal is expected to pass overwhelmingly, a potential sideshow could emerge regarding the future of NBPA executive director Billy Hunter.

As CBSSports.com reported Wednesday, there is an insurgency being led by a handful of agents who are attempting to have their clients' votes approving the new CBA contingent on Hunter agreeing to return as head of the union only on an interim basis.

As far as player involvement, the movement is being led by Celtics stars Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, multiple sources told CBSSports.com.

while the ultimate result was about as good as the players could have hoped for, the manner in which the two sides got there was a circus of incompetence, so i can't blame them for wanting to get rid of Hunter.

isn't that how things were expected to be though? not saying youre wrong or it wasn't a circus but it seemed more the owners just not willing to move at all until finally the end that dragged this thing out

If it wasn't for Hunter they would have been back to work earlier.

I feel like you don't really get what's going on.

the players should have done the whole "we're decertifying the union" thing months earlier, since it became clear they expected to have to do that all along (billy hunter said as much a year before the lockout even happened).

This was being predicted by a lot of insiders for months.  A lot of players were very unhappy with Hunter.

A lot of people think the reason Hunter pushed for (and got) the disclaimer of interest over the decertification, was that if they decertified the Union could get rid of Hunter, while he stayed in place with the disclaimer of interest.

Agreed.  The union should fire Jeffrey Kessler while they're at it.

The players had to know that this deal was about as good as they were going to get.  For two years, they made literally no progress, until the season was taken to the brink and the players ended up losing 20% of their salaries this season.

It was bungled negotiation from the start.  People talk about the failure to decertify earlier, but heck, the players probably could have offered a 51% split in favor of the players a year ago and had this entire thing resolved, without any lockout to start with.

  • You say when......
Hunter was typical "spoiled big union" mentality....too much $$$, too much power...forgetting where the $$$ comes from. did anyone mention the FANS...there....do they ever. Making ends meet..ha...don't get me started. Hunter forgot about the state of the WORLD, and the reality that the $$$ wasn't the same as it was. Owners, take all the risk, pay more people, run the league. Look at gilbert areanas...100 mill....for.......? total loss / risk...how would You like to pay for that out of your profits..? Getting 3-5 million as a player is dern good enough..and furthermore, if you are really worht your bag..then you make some news, get sneaker deals, ect....then your money keeps coming in....if you don't achieve any further...you aren't trying, or you aren't worth it. Imagine what ticket prices COULD really be....!

Do they need to fire Kessler?  I thought he was just hired for this particular negotiation?  I don't think he has a regular position with the union.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the union has his firm on retainer or not, but no professional sports league should let him near a labor conflict again.  I'm sure he's a fantastic attorney, but I don't think it's a coincidence that both the NFL and NBA lockouts resolved when he was pushed to the side.  Heck, there were reports that the last round of negotiations almost fell apart when he tried to shoe-horn himself back in to the situation at the last minute.

I think Hunter should be fired as well.  He got them nothing really and all he did was cost them paychecks.

[dang] right Hunter should go. He looked incompetent every time he talked during a press conference.

Where is Bob Cousy when you need him?
