We need rebounders, defenders and players who can score. I would love to get Marquis and Nate (if he gets amnestied as reported) back at vet minimum deals if they were up for it. Marquis was my favorite player to watch last year before he went down. He seemed to have taken pride in being a lock down defender off the bench and he has always had a good touch from 15 feet and in. When Nate is comfortable he makes shots, hustles for loose balls and stays in front of his man on D.

Also, if it is necessary I would offer Delonte a contract worth more than the minimum and/or multiple years. I would hate for him to go to another team because we low balled him. All three of those players have done everything the Celtics have asked of them, have averaged 10+ ppg within the past three years, and will bring continuity to the roster.

I think Jeff Green will be more aggressive this year if he stays and if Davis comes back for a one year deal I’d be all for it. If he wants more than a year then sign and trade him or give it to him and amnesty him next season possibly.

Other than that I would sign as many power forwards and centers that can stay healthy, rebound and make layups. Reggie Evans on vetmin, Kwame Brown on mini mid level, Leon Powe if healthy on vetmin, Aaron Gray on vetmin. There is no need to waste money on a 2 or 3, let Delonte, ‘Quis, Nate and Green step up like they are capable off.

Rondo/ Delonte/ Bradley
Ray/ ‘Quis/ Nate
Paul/ Green
KG/ Davis/ Evans/ JJJ
JO/ Kwame/ Gray

Do you think we could afford that roster and do you think it would do well?

We have 3 Million and Vet min.  Nate has not been bought out yet.  Even if he's available he's not signing for 3 million or a 1 year contract.  Choose one of Nate, Evans, Gray or Kwame... If they would settle for 3 Million/1 year.

Pretty sure Nate will be available for less than the mini-MLE.  He hasn't been a reliable rotation player for two years.  In a Flip Murray kind of situation.

As to the OP, I think you'd have to subtract Kwame, and apply the mini MLE to Gray to make that a realistic scenario.

I think that roster (sans Kwame) would be another 2nd round and out team.  Offensively, too reliant on sweet shooting from the Big 3 for extended stretches, not enough defensive quality from the bench bigs, too reliant on JO to be healthy/available for big minutes.

If we added Kenyon Martin on his way back from China, I'd like our chances a lot better.  Would make that team quicker and better defensively, enough to sustain the kind of smashmouth defensive intensity and excellence we'd need to weather the inevitable offensive struggles.

Rondo, Ray, Pierce, KG, Jo and Bradley are signed.

JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore(Not Guaranteed) will be signed as well.

Marquis Daniels, Von Wafer, Gilbert Brown, Sasha Pavlovic, Bostjan Nachbar, Michael Redd, Carlos Arroyo, Troy Murphy, Kurt Thomas, Chris Wilcox, Hilton Armstrong, Etan Thomas, DJ Mbenga,  Alexis Ajinca, Kyrlo Fesenko, Joel Pryzbilla etc. can probably be signed for the vet min.

Glen Davis and Jeff Green can be brought back because we have their bird rights.  We can also sign and trade these guys to get players out side of free agency.

Kwame Brown, Delonte West, Nate Robinson(if he's bought out), Reggie Evans, Josh Howard, Aaron Gray, Shannon Brown, Grant Hill, Shane Battier, Carl Landry, Josh McRoberts, Yi Jianlian, Chuck Hayes, Chris Wilcox, Anthony Parker etc. will demand all or part of the full MLE available to the Celtics which would be 3 Million for 3 years.  Most of these guys would have to take a pay cut to take 3 Million and would get offered more from non-tax teams.

We can probably get a cheap player through the Marquis trade exception from some team looking to shed salary.

We should get
1) Delonte West
2) Two of (Marquis Daniels, Von Wafer, Gilbert Brown, Sasha Pavlovic)
3)Jeff Green
4) Three of (Glen Davis, Chris Wilcox, Hilton Armstrong, Carl Landry, Etan Thomas, Reggie Evans)

I think this would give us what we need to get 18.

would rather see Shannon Brown than Quis and Nate; but not sure we could get him.

  • Rondo = Good
that roster is either a first or second round exit, depending on what seed they earn in the regular season.

if they falter through the condensed, back-to-back heavy regular season and end up with a 4th or 5th seed (even 6th), they could very well lose in the first round -- especially in the likely scenario that one of the key players is dealing with injuries.

if their experience carries them through the regular season and they earn a top seed, they could get through the first round without too much trouble but then get cut apart when they have to face one of the other top seeds in the second round (Heat or Bulls, probably).

it's possible that with a totally healthy roster the team could make it to the eastern conference finals, or maybe even the finals -- assuming rondo takes over a series or two as he did in 2010.  still, without a better big rotation or a transcendent scorer somewhere on the roster, i don't see them lasting through 4 rounds to defeat a stacked, hungry young team like the Heat or the Thunder.

barring a major shake-up trade, i think this year is for this iteration of the celtics what 2008-2009 was for the detroit pistons. i just hope that next summer isn't what the summer of 09 was for the pistons.

Possibly the second round.  No depth and no big men to survive a Chicago/Miami and Im not suree it'd get past New York or Orlando (gotta see what kind of moves they make)
