I know, we have a veteran team, true, but it is also true that we need a replacement for Rondo, Bradley is not, Delonte is a 2, AI can play as a point / shooting guard.

It is clear that Iverson is not 10 years ago, this is clear, but Nash is 37, Hill 37, Billups 37???. He would be a great fit, have a great respect for Doc, KG, Paul ... and also he wants to prove he can still help and play at the highest level.

Danny has always been a fan of AI, we have little money to sign and he could come by the minimum.

I am a superfan of Allen Iverson, I want to see him in Boston, not Miami, not in LA.

AI is a warrior and I'm sure he would help us.

I still think that AI can play at a high level and play your 20 minutes? Why not?
I do not understand, but I know he will come back and show everyone.

The same AI that's turning 37, hasn't played in the NBA in over a year, couldn't get a job in the NBA last season, quit on his team in Turkey (And various NBA teams), who is constantly injured, who is turnover prone, who never had a consistent jumper? That AI?

Yeah, good idea.

Iverson is a huge risk to take.  It's possible that he comes back mature, smart, efficient and healthy.  But how likely is it?  This is a risk/reward calculation for Doc and Danny.  There is a 90% chance this would fail, a 9% chance he would contribute about as much as any other bench guy we get and a 1% chance he would be a home run and lead us to a championship.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I'd take a flyer on him filling the 11th/12th spot on the roster on a non guaranteed contract. If he acts up, cut him.
If he doesn't act up, we got a decent scorer off the bench who could win us a few games, maybe even a playoff game or two.

He's not high risk when you can cut him without pay and you have a core like ours.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I've discussed this before.  I think he's worth a shot on a non-guaranteed or even a minimum deal.

Why?

1) He's hit rock bottom.  There should be no more delusions on his part that he's a star anymore.  And if they were ever to pop up, KG and Co. are there to crush them.  And unlike his last two stops, he's not coming off the bench behind unproven young players, he's behind first ballot Hall of Famer Ray Allen and All Star Rajon Rondo.

2) He doesn't have to change his game.  Ideally, he would change his game.  But even if he wants to pretend it's 2001, that could still be valuable with the second unit in `10-15 mpg.  On a team that needs bench scoring, we saw (at times) how Nate taking charge with the second unit in years past could be valuable.  AI could play a similar role of instant offense.  And other teams like the Hawks (with Jamal Crawford) and the Nuggets (with J.R. Smith) have been successful with this strategy.

3) We need something to make us better than last year and we don't have a lot of resources to make it happen.  Even if there's only a 1% chance that AI works out (and I'm under no delusions that the chances are any better than 1%), it's a risk I'd take.

Ummmmmm.....

What?!?!?!?!

We need a replacement for Rondo?

Sure if his name is Chris Paul or Deron Williams, otherwise, no, we do not need a replacement for Rondo.

The idea that there are no more delusions on his part that he's a star anymore is very presumptuous and I don't necessarily buy it.  It's possible, but far from a certainty.  Most players would, but I don't know about AI.  He certainly hasn't shown that yet.

Agree'd.  I don'r know if he can change who he is.

To me his game clearly doesn't fit with what the Celtics do best on offense.  He's a guy who needs the ball in his hands a whole lot to be effective.  The Celtics at their best move the ball around.

Just that tells me he is a bad fit without his considerable baggage.

  • You say when......
Did you forget that AI would get 20+ points ..and take 40 shots.....He is a "gimme the ball" type...no need for the rest of the team to even go over half court..unless you only love rebounding. He doesn't fit the Celts team style..no one would ever see the ball...can he change.....really doubtful...d west is a good add here..if he can stay healthy, he is a great team addition....AI...for really short money and a maybe get some playing time  as a trial only.....he has a hard time being a bench player....a team player...going to practice......

That's painfully obvious based on the ridiculousness of this suggestion.  I never understood how any fan of the game of basketball would be a fan of thugboy's game.  The complete antithesis of team player.  One of the best things that has happened in the NBA is the general dismissal of AI from the league.
