  • Rondo = Good
Atlanta would almost certainly want a young, talented true center or a young, talented point guard who can run their offense.  Those are their two major needs if they are parting with Josh Smith.

So unless you want to give up Rondo, I don't see how we could acquire Josh Smith.

Just for kicks, suppose we do this and resign our guys. Entire FA / amnesty focus goes toward center spot, which isn't much of a change unless you think we're getting much our of O'Neal.

Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O'Neal
for
Joe Johnson, Josh Smith

Lineup:

Rondo / West
Johnson / Allen
Pierce / Green
Smith / Baby
?? / Baby

Why for BOS: Start a new era overnight with Rondo, Johnson, Smith, Green. Ray Allen becomes our 6th man, Johnson & Green allow for Pierce & Allen to take nights off and limit their minutes this year. Josh Smith reasonable replacement for Garnett considering age and health. Lots of scorers around Rondo. Smith clearly wants to play here, and Johnson would be a homecoming story.

Why for ATL: They would kill to unload the Johnson contract entirely and could be a major FA player with only Horford on a long term deal.

As much as the Hawks probably want to get out of J.J.'s contract, I doubt they want to basically plunge themselves into rebuilding to do it, which is what that trade would accomplish.

Yeah could be, depends on ownership I would think. That contract is BAD, and Josh Smith is probably gone after next year. $25M in 2015/16 when Johnson will be 35!!!

Amnesty is an option for Johnson, but they would still be paying his salary... this move would wipe $93M off their books in one fell swoop, when they aren't really a contender anyway.

If it's such a good idea to surround Rondo with shooters, why the interest in Josh Smith?

Jeff Green is the better option.

If you play Josh Smith at the 4, he's not a bad shooter, more like mediocre.  Somewhat on par with Baby from long-range.And he's an excellent finisher.  A comparable scorer overall to Jeff Green, only with more slashing than shooting.  Also a much better rebounder and defensive asset.
Do you watch Hawks games? lol he got booed everytime he lined up for a jumper Barkely put it so well on a halftime segmenthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvM-FFI71vI

Josh Smith isn't the type of guy who signs cheap.  He's the type of guy who signs a huge deal, and then immediately starts undercutting the organization and the coach, demanding a trade.

Haha.  I love the guy's athleticism and shot-blocking instincts.  I hate his attitude.

Like they said already. You have Jeff Green and Jjuan why J smith. Shane Battier maybe, but other than the fact that he is friends with Rondo (which may or may not be true) not sure why we are talking about this guy.

How would he come here he's kind of calling out Ainge he won't want to play here....and he says Rondo didnt say much about it but I'm sure he did if Josh is his friend and his thoughts are similar. I know it is a business and Rondo's heard the trade talks before, but this time I hope it doesn't stir up bad blood. If so not that I want that but he will have to be gone.

If there was anyway to get Smith outside or trading Rondo or Pierce I would do it in a heartbeat. Defensive master, great finisher, the fast break with Smith and Rondo would be killer. I would love to see a lineup of Rondo/Ray/Pierce/Smith/Howard after this season. Holy giddiness.

Really?  I was thinking

Rondo/Pierce/JGreen/Smith/KG

With Ray off the bench.  Pierce could defend like crazy (he can) and share the load/spread the load on offense (as would KG).
