If the Celtics are targeting Chuck Hayes then it means Davis is going to be gone. Hayes = Davis, in many ways. Maybe a bit > in some and a bit < in others, but still...the Celtics wouldn't need both on the team.

Given the option, and all things being equal, I'd take Hayes. But as I said elsewhere Hayes vs Davis is like moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic. It gives the Front Office something to do and us something to talk about, but it's not going to solve the much bigger problem(s...and the ship is still going to sink unless we deal with those problems.

That other "Chuck," if I'm not mistaken, was also one of the most athletic players in the league in his prime.
I wasn't inducting Hayes into the HoF, I was just making the point that while height matters, it ain't everything.

He's not a high scorer but he's a very effective scorer at over 50% for his career. I think he'll make up for not being a big time scorer by grabbing all those rebounds. Extra possessions never hurt.

Inside scoring will be alright if Rondo can penetrate and dish for easy buckets. That's really the best we can ask for as far as inside scoring. There's just no low post scorers available to the C's.

He's a player I'm very fond of and he fits in with this team very well. I really hope the Celtics can get him.

Erisred: It sounds like the Celtics are going to try to sign and trade BBD anyways. They have no intentions of keeping him unless he's dirt cheap.

Also, Hayes is a better rebounder and defender than Davis and much more capable of playing at the 5 for extended periods of time.

There are two things I look for in a center:

1) Can he step in and play 30mpg if Jermaine O'Neal is injured for a month-long stretch?

2) If he and Glen Davis were both on the roster, would Doc be willing to play him instead of Big Baby at the end of the fourth quarter in a close game?

Height, length, rebounding skill, inside scoring, etc. matter, but only so far as they contribute to a potential free agent being a yes to those two questions.  I'm willing to give in a bit on #2 if Jeff Green can mature into that role.

As long as we dont overpay him, like we did with Jermaine.

I think Hayes would be able to get the ball for the team.  One thing he does well is board.   But I am skeptical he can defend the real bigs well and stats do not bear this out.   What he could do is eat minutes.

I saw him a few months ago and he was heavy and out of shape.

I think he would be a solid target. he rebounds well which is something this team needs.

he also score in the post so he wont be going out shooting horrible 2's

also, he played with rondo in college so Im sure they both know their tendencies

  • Another undersized Celtic...
We were on par with the rest of the league in defensive rebounding last season, no? I want size on this team, personally. A 6'6" center and a 6'7" PF (Landry) just doesn't appeal to me--we already have that in BBD who plays both positions, so just resign him, you know what you're getting and he knows the system. But I don't want him either. I never thought I'd want Kwame Brown for anything, but at least he's legit 7'...

We didn't overpay for JO. We paid market value for him. Besides his contract doesn't impact us one bit since it expires after this season along with almost everyone else. If we had signed him to more than 2 years, then yes I would've agreed with you.

Agreed. You can take those smaller guys if they have some length, speed and athleticism. Those guys, along with BBD, do not.

I'd take a chance on Kwame. I would have liked Doc and KG (and Clifford Ray would've been nice) to have a full summer/training camp/preseason to change his mindset and conditioning, but as long as he could change by the playoffs I wouldn't mind.

Baring a trade I think that's a very good off season. I'd love it if we could get josh howard as well.
