That's exactly it. The trade exception works as a blank check that can be used to acquire a player whose salary is equal to or less than the TE.

TEs can be used up bit by bit as well, and have an expiration date of one calendar year.

Exactly.  It allows them to trade for anyone with a contract less than the trade exception without sending any other salary in return. 

It could also be used to sign and trade for another free agent.  They would need the other team to play along, but it opens up another way to add players...which would be very important if they lost Davis.

A wild card with NJ would be if Prokorov could be wooed by the history/status of KG and/or hope that KG would make Derron think the Nets are serious about contending, so KG for some package of Morrow/Petro/Lopez could start a discussion.

After seeing how the Perk trade affected the team's morale and chemistry, i don't think Danny will have the guts to trade any of the Big 4 just yet. Now if the Celtics come out flat and don't look like legit contenders during mid season, then Danny just might decide to blow everything up and start rebuilding early.

I certainly hope NJ offers a substantial chunk of money to Glen Davis.  They are set to be one of our biggest competitors in the 2012 free agent; the more long-term contracts they add this year, the better our chances in 2012.
