I would find this deeply depressing if I were my parents' age.  Not sure it won't be worse by the time I'm starting to contemplate retirement, though.

Meh, they're making over 3k a month. They'll have to cut back, and probably move out of their home, but between the sale of their home and downsizing, I dont see how they couldn't manage to live in the US. Add in the four kids helping out (if needed)..this is nothing but fear mongering and is a non-story.

Hell, I could retire tomorrow at 27 and move to a third world country and live just fine and dandy with limited income, just like the rest of the world does.

Granted, when I retire, I'm moving straight to Costa Rica.

3K a month should be fine for people that have paid off their house and have no kids to take care of.   They're only in their 50s and are probably going to live till their late 80s.  And they don't want to work? Cmon. Get real

hey I'm going to do this. When I retire I'm buying some land down in Puerto Rico where my wife has family and building a home. For the price of the land and the construction on the house, it will be minimal. Family will provide me with all the fruit and vegetables and fresh meat I need and since I'm still in America, I still get all the benefits of being an American while not having to pay local taxes.

And I'm already fluent in Spanish.

Works for me.

This.  Some people seem to sometimes forget the difference between "being able to retire" and "being able to retire AND maintain the lifestyle I am accustomed to."

Will you need to downside to a smaller home or less expensive part of the country? Maybe.
Will you need to cut down on discretionary expenses? Probably.
Do you need to leave the country to avoid running out of money? Doubtful.

with the absence of pensions (except for public employees), minimal social security benefits and 401K plans taking an unbelievable beating over the past few years, many people will be lucky if they can retire at 67.  Throw in costs of healthcare at that age, rocketing property (home, vehicle and other)  taxes, rising utility rates (especially heating oil), gas prices, etc .....
-->retirement is no sure bet for many people.
