Commish David Stern has cancelled games thru November 11, and states matter-of-factly that there is no chance of an 82-game season. With the league only willing to go to 50% and the players not budging under 52%, I don't see how this will ever get done.

I'm not sure what all the positive chatter was Friday, but it seems they're further apart than ever, not closer. I'm sick of this whole mess, and the people who are really getting screwed are the ones who make this whole thing go 'round ... us!

Story and Stern presser are here, (keep it rolling and D-Fish presser follows).

(Forgive me and merge if this was already posted).

This will be news to my yahoo account, which, whenever I go to the sports page, keeps telling me that my Celtics are playing a game tonight.

Every time I see it I think "aha, I've woken from a strange nightmare where there was no basketball" only to realize a moment later that it was a false awakening, and, like a true nightmare, I am still stuck in it, deep in it, and there is no telling what the outcome will be...
Celtics fan for life.

Well, I was rather concerned about a potentially compressed 82 game season for our team, so this may be a blessing in disguise.

The owners are really stubborn and want to win on every issue.

They are not really negotiating with the players.

No, there's no blessing in disguise. There isn't going to be a full season and for the fans that really su*ks.

If they don't bother to start until January or February, not only will I not even bother to watch, I'll never watch basketball again.

Then Stern, the players and owners can come to my house and negotiate BRI with me so I can start watching again.

I never really understood that sort of response to a strike/lockout.  Do I think its silly that they're  battling over money? Yes.  But ultimately I really only care about the games they play.  When they decide they want to play them again I'll watch them because I enjoy watching basketball.  If I ever stop enjoying the product on the court I'll stop watching (and I must say I enjoy the product less and less every year so I watch less and less already).

It's actually quite easy to understand the response. Right now, the owners and players are CLEARLY showing a lack of respect and caring for the fans by sacrificing games to fatten their wallets.

As a result, it's a very natural and understandable reaction on my part to be upset by this. Why should I just be taken for granted and expected to watch when all these idtiots in the NBA decide to stop acting like children?

Not to mention, Kevin Garnett has specfically been reported as being one of the biggest children in this whole mess.

Quite frankly, I am actually quite shocked and disappointed that other fellow NBA fans would just be willing to follow the league like sheep when the lockout ends, after they clearly showed they don't care about us.

Last year the Owners claimed they had 300 Million in losses in a bad economy.  They players have given back 200 Million dollars in BRI alone.  That's meeting the owners 2/3rd's of the way on THEIR OWN NUMBER.  The owners want the players to pay or every last cent with a 50-50 split.  What happens if the economy becomes stronger?  The owners will re-negotiate to give back the money to the players?
The owners have won every other issue, the cap is much tougher, the MLE is less for a shorter amount of time.  They got an amnesty which allows for the owners to make up for THEIR OWN STUPID MISTAKES,  they still want to get rid of the  bi-annual exception, and increase the draft age to 20.
In what universe is it APPARENT that the owners came down a LOT?  Please stop spreading false information.

Wow, A LEAGUE source blamed Kevin Garnett.  All the players have shown nothing but respect for KG.  The league has also attacked Billy Hunter, and now Derek Fisher in trying to divide the players and hurt their image.  What they are doing is quite disgusting frankly.  Stern and the owners are absolute scum and an embarrassment to the human race.

Well, that's fine if you choose to do that (Not watch basketball again).

But after this latest breakdown, I'm a bit more convinced that the owners seem to be trying to fleece the players.

Just my take.

For the players to come down from 57 to 52.5? Now the owners want 50-50?

Someone here may be more knowledgeable about how much money lost that would mean for the players, but now it seems as if David Stern and Co may be asking for a bit too much, IMO.

Why don't they get to 51-49, lol....this is getting ridiculous.

But for me I'd be perfectly comfortable with the games starting a week or two before Christmas, with 60-70 games total in the season.

That would set our Celtics up quite nicely, I think. For our older team that would, to me, be a blessing in disguise.

That would probably help LA, too. They are just about as old as Boston.

Too bad the Celtics do most of their work before Christmas every year.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

LOL!

Good Point...they'd go like 9 and 0, then.

Maybe in my scenario (60-70 games starting two weeks prior to Christmas) they'd carry the winning over to at least Ground Hog day, maybe.

Maybe "understood" was the wrong word.  I get why you would feel that way, and I don't begrudge you that, I just don't feel nearly as invested in the nuts and bolts of the NBA business - I just like watching them play.

Hmmm...well it's up to personal interpertation. To be quite honest, in my opinion, I don't think the owners are being that unreasonable. I think 50/50 split is actually quite fair. This is a partnership between players and owners. Aren't the players making enough money from their contracts? Why do they also need more than 50 percent of the BRI split?

As for the season starting around Christmas time, I also wouldn't mind that either. But at this point, I think both sides are clearly dug in for the long-haul. If they wouldn't come to terms on a full season, I just don't see how on earth they come to terms after lost revenue from missed games.
