I have received information on two agreed-to trades that involve next year's draft picks.

As far as I can recall, we haven't OK'ed trading future draft picks on draft night. Personally, I think it's a very bad idea.

I do not have the league constitution handy (on my work computer, apparently), so I can't confirm exactly what our league rules specify about trading future draft picks on draft night.

Until I do, I won't be announcing any trades that involve 2013-14 draft picks.

I believe the new rule is that we can trade next years draft picks starting during the current year's draft. In the past, we only allowed trading of future picks staring after the current year's draft is complete.

However, this change may have only been in the H2H league. I can't quite remember if it was for both leagues.

Either way, the two agreed upon trades need to be reworked to either remove the future picks or pend the announcement until future picks are fair game.

I thought we had ok'd trading next year's pick by draft day. I don't see any harm in this, it stimulates more trading, and allows teams that are rebuilding to make serious ground towards rebuilding.
I guess I generally agree with this.

I tried to go back and look at last year's trading and thought what I saw was the next year's picks included in trades like one hour or 24 hours after the draft. Then this year we opened trading in Aug.  So I thought we were good. It seems natural to me. At least between two GMs that will definitely be in the league the next year. I mean I don't think we should trade picks more than the next year's draft out, because we could always get hit by lightning or switch GMs or something, but I feel like trading assets is trading assets. If I can't do this then it seems like I'd have to say so and so will be making/announcing my pick for me. Or I'd have to make a very complicated draft list to send in. I figured this would be easier. Plus it goes through the veto process anyway.  Maybe it's better to do that now than later. Maybe there's something I'm not seeing. Because I have like 3 of these things set up and at least for now with the state of my team I definitely feel like I have to look with a big eye to the future.

Let's assume you're right for a second. We're going to do the veto process (4 days I think) during the draft? Isn't it better to do it now?

Here's what's in the H2H constitution, which will also serve as the points league, I think:

Quote
16. Future draft picks may be traded on draft day, but no further than one year into the future. This is also true for trades made after the draft or during the regular season.

Out of curiosity where is this constitution? Like it was signed by two thirds of the delegates? For all I know there are lots of rules I'm not aware of. Is it posted somewhere?

I agree with this point. If we are going to have trades subject to a veto, which we absolutely should, and we have agreed to allow trading next year's draft picks, which we have, then it makes perfect sense to allow trades involving next year's draft picks now, before the draft, so that they can be reviewed for potential veto before the draft occurs.

Well. I guess in that case please place on hold both confirmed trades until midnight of draft day.

Which is why I think trades that involve future draft picks should be restricted to after the draft, when people can actually get a better sense of what's involved.

Players should be picked on behalf of other teams, and then traded.

Otherwise, people will start saying, hey, if we can trade future draft picks before the draft, why can't I trade my 2014 1st rounder for eja's 2014 1st rounder a month before draft night? And we have no sense of the value of either of those picks.

For what it's worth I assure you I have no desire to trade my 2014 picks. Although I admit I'd probably take them as sweeteners.

I am a little confused here.

In 5 weeks how exactly am I to know more than I know now about the worth of someone like Rondo2287's future picks?  I always just thought of everything as a risk for everyone involved.

I'm also confused you're saying you think this should be done after the draft, but that we are actually allowed to do it the day of the draft.

I don't think any of this is anywhere near as bad as the problems we have with tanking. That is far worse.

I just think it is very difficult to pick players on behalf of other teams. I'm willing to try that.

part of my concern is that I'm not expecting everyone to be there for the draft. I don't expect to be there myself. I hope I am but I can't count on it. If I were there it would be great to be on the phone and make the pic for someone, but since not everyone can be there it puts some people at a disadvantage and those people would have to do some work to send in perfect lists for people to get the pics right. I think I'd just announce that rondo will make my picks at x spots and do it that way.

You'll know what players are on his roster, at the least.

To be honest, given the confusion caused by people trading picks twice, convoluted protection scenarios on traded picks, and the problems with lopsided trades involving draft picks, I almost want to make them untradeable altogether.

Yikes!

I would not want that.

I do agree that we need to do something about the odd assortment of protections and conditional-swaps. Maybe do away with them all together. Or perhaps eliminate protections/conditional-swaps on all second rounders.

This was going to be my proposal -- and was in the H2H league where it was an even bigger headache.

I'm fine with conditional picks in the 1st round.

I'm fine with swapping 2nds but they just need to be as is, IMO.

To some degree, changes in Yahoo's system --- which now allows for trading of next year's picks will alleviate some of this.
