"SR: Do you think that the drive to represent, on an iconic level, will be a factor in your free agency? Do you see yourself in a much larger market?

DH: There’s more you can do in a bigger place. I’m stuck in a tough position because I feel like right now, where I’m at, I’ve done so much. And I just don’t know what else I can do. I can’t live for everybody else. I don’t know what decision I’m gonna make as of right now. It’s been crazy. Everybody wants me to come here, come play here, come to our team, do this. It’s a great feeling, though, to be wanted.

SR: You’re gone. I can feel it.

DH: The toughest part for me is the city — the people. They’ve got burgers named after me in Orlando, they’ve got a Web site saying, “Please stay.” I love the people in the city. I’ve literally sat on the bench with a towel on my head crying, because I feel the passion in the stands. I just think about what’s going to be best for what I want to accomplish in my life. And I don’t want that door to close on me, wherever that door is. I don’t want it to close."

boston's market comes from the winning tradition, this says to me if he leaves he'll go to LA (clippers or lakers)  which STINKS ! brooklyn still has a shot as well but to me its LA or Orlando in the sweepstakes no one else
so i wonder what to do with all that cap space . hmmmmm

thoughts?

Lets find out what the CBA will be like before we start worrying too much about things like this.  I personally think he is a huge longshot to come to Boston anyways, but a lot can change over the next year.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
I missed the part where he confirmed he's not coming to boston. Can you point it out to me? The only thing I take from that article is that he's tired of carrying the Magic franchise. I think he goes where he feels he has the best chance to win. The Thunder would be absolutely devastating with Howard.

That article confirmed absolutely nothing. Pretty misleading title if you ask me.

if you still think there's any chance of him coming here after he spoke about what a BIGGER MARKET WOULD DO for him i truly dont know what to tell you bro the article confirms it for me he all but said he wants to be in a bigger market which is LA & ny(brooklyn) at this point only thing he didnt do was say "Im pretty much going to la or staying & its a tough decision" which is what i took from the article

You do realize that after NY, LA, Chicago and Miami that Boston is the next largest NBA market, right?

I updated the title of the thread, as to not mislead anyone into thinking it was explicit.

As far as what he means by a bigger market, Boston is most certainly a bigger market than Orlando, at least as far as the stage.  It may not be in NY or LA, but the prestige of being a Celtic does mean something to some players, and IMO, he is (once again) way to vague to get any real meaning out of this.  Not to mention, he won't necessarily be able to pick and choose exactly where he goes.

assuming cba s&t rules stay similar what pieces do we have that even compare with the pieces the nets, lakers, bulls, miami even okc (thought its a small market) to offer orlando? that confirms me for me i dont know about anyone else but i think orlando will trade howard to a place where they can get the most value & its not here unless they let howard walk the chances are slim to none

Let's also look at what might be happening:

If the NBA does come back with a CBA that doesn't allow sign and trades, which is being pushed for very hard by the owners, which of the top big market teams can Howard sign with?

LA is committed to $91 million for the 2012-13 season...no cap room

NY is committed to $44 million for the 2012-13 season...with only 4 players signed and Landry Fields on a qualifying offer. Don't see how he signs there especially with no PG.

Chicago is committed to $54 million for the 2012-13 season...with just 6 players signed don't see it happening there.

Miami is committed to $67 million for the 2012-13 season...not happening.

Boston is committed to $29 million in the 2012-13 season... with just three players signed and two being Rondo and Pierce and Doc still around it appears Boston might be one of the very few big market teams that could afford Howard.

New jersey might be the only other big market team that might pull it off depending on what they do this off season.

this article didnt say anything about not coming to boston...i think front runners is still orlando

if you talk about big markets, at the moment next year, Boston will have a lot of money to sign people, so I will still put Boston in the top 5 markets for dwight to go to.

I dont know what the order will be but Orlando being number 1, followed by LA, NY, Boston in w/e order.

I remember reading in other threads, that if there won't be a season this year, we have a better chance at getting dwight cuz Lakers have no cap to sign him unless its a trade, and if NY get CP3, i doubt they will have money to sign Dwight

Have you been reading about the lockout. Assuming the CBA and sign and trade rules will remain the same is the mother of all bad assumptions.

im not too sure of what's happening in the cba but if there's no sign & trades and there is some carmelo rule which i dont know much about at all then i say we have a better shot than i expected ,like chris said in the 1st reply we'll have to see what happens in the new cba i cant see it changing so dramatically things like no sign & trades and the melo rule have to be sticking points on why players wont accept the deal

Actually the players have made some concessions but the main sticking points are the luxury tax penalties which harden the cap and the percentage of the BRI. If the owners gave the players the 53% and softened the luxury tax some the players would probably be okay with the amnesty clause, the Melo rule, slighter shorter guaranteed contracts and no sign and trades.

Boston is ahead of Miami in market size i'm pretty sure i've read it somewhere.

My gut, FWIW, says that there are several very, very good reasons why the owners are standing tough in the CBA fiasco, and all of them will come together to keep DH in Disney.

Too many owners were burned at once by "franchise" players bolting in FA.  I think I read somewhere that the value of the Cavs franchise was estimated to drop by $100M when Lebron left.  Expect it to be harder for "franchise" players to leave either by a real financial penalty for leaving (no S&T to maintain Bird rights, with the higher raises and longer contract that come with staying), or an outright franchise tag.

I do expect owners and players to agree on a general amnesty clause that has players getting paid their guaranteed contract, but not counting on the cap/tax system.  In this case, either owners that can afford it will just let the dead weight walk (Later, Agent Zero).  So it could be easier for Orlando to retool on the fly, making those franchise stars less "stuck" on bad teams (like KG in Minny), since teams would have more roster flexibility to build (and rebuild) supporting casts for their superstars
