Yeah, I agree (although I don't think Kobe was actually a draft day trade, but thats another story).  I think the only important fact is that the player played their whole career with the same franchise.  How they got to that franchise shouldn't matter.

Well I'm thinking of "unblemished" players.  Player A drafted by the team, plays for the same team, and retires with the same team as well.  You can include Kobe or Dirk into the conversation, it doesn't really change anything anyway since I'm talking about the ability for one star player to remain with one team over the course of his playing career.

I'm thinking the new CBA deal, if prescribed to be similar what Chris said, then the likelihood of that will happen.

Rajon Rondo...a franchise player.  Hmmm, it'll be interesting to see how he responds to becoming the unquestioned team leader.  Right now the torched is being moved around the Big 3 but when they all leave, I'm wondering if he'll be mature enough to handle some tough times.  Time will tell but I have faith in him.  I think he's a great person with a strong will to win.  We'll see what happens in 3 or 4 years.

If the owners get their way, then yes.  One of the owners goals in the CBA negotiations is to make it so they can reward "franchise players" for staying with the teams that they came up with. 

There was talk the NBA could adopt a franchise tag just like the NFL.  But the owners are also pushing for shorter length contracts (as an alternative to non-guaranteed contracts because they realize the players would never accept that).  I think the shorter terms are definitely going to create more player movement and reduce the chances of careers with  single team.

From what I understand, a franchise tag like the NFL was never actually on the table.  It was referred to as a franchise tag, but unlike the NFL, it wouldn't prevent the player from signing with other teams, just give him more financial benefits to sign with his team.

I agree though, that the shorter contracts will promote player movement among the lower tiered players, but the owners very much want to make it more likely for the franchise type players stay with the teams they came up with.

Something else that's gone unmentioned in this thread- the marriage between the franchise player and the team's coach.  I would say that the coaching system is equally important to the franchise player's style of play.  Obviously you have a marriage made in heaven when you unite Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, which makes it easy for both parties to want to stay for an extended period of time.  I realize it is a NFL reference but bear with me.

Suppose you sign the franchise player to a long term deal.  Then his first coach that he meshed well with resigned.  A new coach comes in.  Soon, you hear about a spat between him and the coach and they cannot work it out.  If the front office ultimately side with the coach, what happens to the franchise player?  How can he be moved to another team with that large salary?  Do you know if the CBA deal will allow a franchise player to be let go due to circumstances outside of either party's control?  Or will the large salary force the ownership to keep recycling coaches until they find one that fits the player's style?

I don't know, it sounds to me this franchise tag gives the player a bit too much power.  He would essentially control the team at his whim.

Why not?  We've always had one.  In fact the Celtics probably have the most "franchise" players that played for the same team for most if not all of their career.

We're just too big of a market.  We'll attract somebody one way or another.  I know Stern hates us too much to give us a Ewing, Duncan, Howard, etc.  But if our team starts sucking that bad Danny can just draft one ourselves.

If we are talking franchise players, like Paul Pierce, then I don't see why Rondo wouldn't fit into that category. Before the Big Three era, Paul was a very good player / all-star talent, but he wasn't one of the very best players in the league. I kinda see Rondo at that point right now. Just because he has other all-stars around him doesn't diminish that fact. If he stays with the Celtics his whole career and the team stays moderately successful, there is no reason he won't be seen in the same light. Heck, already has as many championships as Paul does.

Define franchise player.

Half the teams around the league have at least one "franchise player".

Paul Pierce is a loyal, franchise-changing type of player. That breed isn't produced every draft.

It's impossible to say if/when the C's will get their next Paul Pierce, but their current one isn't exactly done yet.

to me, a "franchise player" is a guy you can build a playoff team around.  rondo's not that guy.  a good #2 or #3, for sure, but not the #1.
