So, earlier tonight, I got a text with a picture:  it's one of my best friends with Baby.  My boy ain't no little fella, but he looked lilliputian next to Davis.

My buddy's a chef in Baton Rouge, and he knew Baby was gonna be dining at his place tonight, so he ran out at lunch and got two basketballs for Baby to sign - one for me and one for his son.  Pretty cool.

He ended up having a few pops with him, and Baby's manager texted me via my friend's phone and said, verbatim, "This is glen mgr.  He wants to be in Boston but he's a f agent.  Tell your peeps he wasn't out of shape in the playoffs he just had a bad series ... don't forget, the kid loves beantown."

So, there you have it.  I'm doing my duty and passing the message along to my Celtics peeps for whatever that's worth, lol.

Anyway, for you NYC area people, my chef buddy got invited to do a dinner at the James Beard house for the 3rd year in a row, and Baby has officially signed up to help him prep in the kitchen then eat in the dining room (apparently, Baby is quite the foodie).  So, I'll keep you posted on the date for the Beard dinner (will be next calendar year) if anyone wants to attend, eat some great food and hang out with the Baby.

Funny thing..I never thought Glen Davis was out of shape really at all last year. Wasn't even remotely a major concern.

Very cool story ... TP for sharing. I found out about Glen's affinity for cooking/food, etc., on the "Pre-Game Meal" show with Ray's wife, when he was a guest, (CSNNE).

Like IP, I didn't really think he was struggling with his weight as an excuse for his poor performance in the playoffs, (though a lot of people seem to want to hang it on that), I think he just plain had a slump in his game, and it was timed very poorly.

He obviously loves Boston and being able to play with and learn from KG, Paul, and Ray, et al, but as a Free Agent in a very shaky time period for the NBA, I'm not sure he'll be able to remain here ... time will tell.

Pretty awesome that your friend thought to bring a couple of balls for him to sign and had a chance to hang with him ... he seems like a genuinely nice guy, and someone very down-to-earth.

Great story!

Really nice story.  Thanks.  A lot of people struggled against the Heat.  Tell Baby that at least he had the right idea when he tried to attack the basket against them.  We should have done more of that.

Yeah, the "out of shape" comment from his manager was totally unsolicited.  My original text to my buddy (which the manager may or may not have been responding to) was just some excited drivel like "...ask him if we're gonna win another ring anytime soon" - you know just to say something.

I assume Davis and his people have been hearing a lot of "out of shape" stuff.

Anyway, I'm attaching the picture in case anyone's curious.  My buddy said when he shook his hand it was like someone threw five ripe giant bananas on his hand, lol.

Yeah for him he looked about as good as I think I'll ever expect.

Though he did show that he can't be an effective 30 min player in this league. He tops out at around 24 or so, beyond that and he can't bring the same energy level.

Yeah, I think this was the real problem.  I think he was in solid enough shape, but he just can't handle the minutes he was forced to play due to the injuries in the frontcourt.  So by the time the playoffs came around, his legs were gone.

Doc Rivers kept sending Davis out there to "play out of the slump".

By the time Rivers reigned in Davis, it was too late and Davis's own mental state was lost along with his game.

Even Tommy said he thought Baby put on like 20lbs over the course of the season.  I never agreed with that one.
