With the lock out denying us much news about the current Celtics team, I wanted to ask a Celtics history question. I've always wondered why the Celtics passed on Julius Erving (a UMass alum) in the 1972 draft? Boston drafted Paul Westphal (not a bad choice) in '72 even though Erving was still available. Anyone have any insight into this?

I think Dr. J was playing in the ABA at the time, and his ABA team took the position that he was still under contract to them. A lot of NBA teams didn't want to take the risk (and indeed, Dr. J didn't play in the NBA until 1976).
