Chuckle. Green never could play. Swift never could play. O'Bryant never could play. Perfect illustration of the recycling mentality of this board. "I think Player X has value and is cool because he's young, so I'll construct one strawman after another to prove it."

Nice try, but nonsense.

Hoodwinking another general manager has absolutely nothing to do with a player's value, and everything to do with the stupidity of the other GM. Green had value because McHale was a dope; nothing more, nothing less.

We should retire McHale's number - again - for taking that bag of trash for a Hall of Famer.

Ainge has his crushes - and oftentimes, he's dead wrong. As he was about the above.

I will say this, though: The notion of rolling out that stiff Bob Swift in green has been good for a hearty midsummer laugh.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

I don't think it's true that Swift could never play, but his knee injuries (at the age of 20) pretty much kill that discussion. And is anyone talking about O'Bryant?

Danny didn't pursue Green, he fell into Danny's lap and the player Ainge wanted was picked right before the Celts pick. But gauging the possible trade value of players and building up the value of those assets is an important job for a GM whether you're dismissive of that or not. Danny took a team that was pretty much PP and crap and added Perk, Rondo, Ray and KG without having a pick higher than #5 at his disposal. Trying to denigrate what he's done by claiming that all the other GMs are dopes or continually harping on his taking a flyer on O'Bryant (as the 15th man on the roster, no less) is the nonsense in this thread.

Honestly, if he is healthy (and off the roids), I think he would be a very interesting guy to bring in.  Before he went crazy with the "weightlifting", and consequently couldn't stay healthy, he really did look like a quality player

LOL WAT?!! i barely remember him in the league and I'ma huge basketball fan dude is trash his tattoos are trash and his beard is trash quality player?? HA

In his second year, he had a couple nice runs where he looked like he was putting things together as a 20 year old center, and he actually started 20 games.  Sure, it was with a bad team, but it was still impressive.

At that point, there were actually discussions that he had passed Al Jefferson in his development(who had a bad second season).  Unfortunately, after this season, the injury bug hit him, followed by him inexplicably putting on about 30 pounds of muscle that his frame simply couldn't handle, and he was never able to stay on the court since.

Some day, I'll understand the recycling mentality of this board - whether it be the annual "Bring back Gerald Green" threads, Paddy O'Blount or the attempt here to exhume the rotting, fetid corpse of Bob Swift's career.

This isn't the day.

Danny was wrong - dead wrong - on Robert Swift, as he was on Green, as he was on the stiff O'Bryant, etc.

You can give him a pass on Green, can't you?

Speak up if you were not happy (or ecstatic) when both Danny Granger and Gerald Green were still on the board when Indiana was deciding at number 17.   Some might have wanted Granger (easy to say in retrospect), but I'd venture a guess that 95% of Celtics nation was thrilled that the young Green 'fell' to the C's at 18.  Maybe Danny should have known better, but I'll wager the vast majority of GMs would not have passed on Gerald where the C's were selecting.

good point and good memory. i also remember that a few other GMs tried to trade with danny so they could pick green. who knew? at the time it was a no brainer pick.

i dont blame ainge, green just did not have much IQ, basketball or otherwise.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Really wanted Granger; but never thought what would have happened if Danny traded down and took David Lee;) Then he would have truly been a god (small g) among men. As it stands he is merely mortal and we have JR Giddens (over CDR and Chalmers) to prove it!
