yeah, i think people get their achilles repaired all the time without aspirations for playing in the NBA. Though his playing days are over, I'm sure walking around without pain would be nice.

Does anyone remember the furor and passion that people had in believing that Rasheed Wallace was DEFINITELY not retiring and would be coming back. Heck, people were believing it all the way into March.

It NEVER happened.

And neither will Shaq returning. The surgery was something he was going to need regardless of whether he was retiring or not. He's gone. Get used to it.
Gotta admit there was a much better chance of Sheed coming back than there is that Shaq will.  He was 4-5 years younger than Shaq is, came to one of the first team practices, stayed near Boston after the season started, and a quote from Pierce that pretty blatantly alluded to it.

That plus having JO, Perk, and Semih all hurt pretty much before the season even started, left us desperate for size, and lead to people probably hoping Sheed came back rather than thinking he actually would.  It ended up dying down when Baby started the season hot and Semih surprised us with 1 shoulder, but then picked back up again when Shaq got hurt, we traded away our starting C + Erden and Baby turned into one of the worst 6th men in the league (again horribly desperate for size).
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

It is unlikely... but there is probably about 2 or 3% of NBA stars that attempt a comeback after going out of the league. Some ones that have been attempted successful (meaning they made it back to the nba) or unsuccessful in recent years were Jordan, Scottie Pippin, Shawn Kemp, Anfernee Hardaway, Antoine Walker, Dennis Rodman, Tim Hardaway, Allen Iverson, Allen Houston, Alonzo Mourning.

There have also been plenty of role players that tried to make it back (or did) like jonathan bender, Kevin Willis (in his 40's), Byron Russel, Greg Ostertag etc....

While it remains highly unlikely, at the end of the day it is probably more likely chances than the celtics had of winning the championships for about 15 years prior to KG and Ray Allen and we all still watched and hoped and prayed. Lets keep hoping the big fella comes back!

Another one of those Celtics' "day-to-day" injuries that ended up requiring surgery.

I guess we can at least know from the scar that this was a major thing and wasn't a case of Shaq not giving it his all or us babying him too much re: coming back. This was a very serious injury.

makes you wonder if the medical team knew shaq would be this bad, and danny gambled that a front court of JO/Kristic would do it.

Ray allen did say in a recent interview that shaq told him he was done back in February..and was going to retire

if we are going to act like this is completely ridiculous I will also throw out the fact that Doc Rivers said a comeback would not surprise him when Shaq retired... i tried to find the article, it was either the herad or globe...

Didn't he just sign with Turner to do the NBA on TNT?

So how much of a chance is there that he really comes back?

I say none.

Umm... I would say that has next to zero impact on a potential comeback. Covering a game or two a week  as an analyst would hardly be the kind of job that would stop him from training or working out (he didn't sign on to be a lawyer here...). Coaches (including Mark Jackson two weeks ago) and our own Doc rivers are plucked from commentating all the time to return to the league. Although returning to the nba tp coach is obviously not the same, it doesn't mean it couldn't happen for a player. I don't get why people get such great joy from saying there is zero chance of something happening. People make observations on small things during the offseason, especially now more than ever with a lockout. Noticing the fact that Shaq has surgery and has lost a lot of weight seem fair things to have a fantasy of him returning based off...and as I pointed out earlier in the thread players wanting to return to the NBA after retiring is hardly unheard of...
