It's everywhere right now.

I'm echoing Alex Kennedy, but who would've thought that Shaq and Yao would retire within a month of each other?

Sad.

Next to Jordan, Yao probably brought more fans to the NBA than any player in its history.

That's sad.

Really sad ... the guy really never got a chance to hit his peak. I hope this isn't what becomes of Oden, Roy, et al.

That's a shame. I hate to see player's careers end early due to injury.

Terrific player too. Team orientated. Defense, rebounding, scoring (low post scorer + jump-shooter), passing. Very good all-around player that played the right way.

Hurts lose such a talented player / big man. The league is worse off.

Too bad.  One in a long line of guys who's injuries never let them be as great as they should have been.

I guess your career gets cut short when you spend all of your offseasons playing in China.

7 full years without rest = 10-12 years with rest methinks.

Great player, great person. Proof that you don't have to be a Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. to make it in the NBA. Thank you, big fella.

I wonder how much consideration he will get for the HOF.  Note that it's the "basketball" HOF, not the "NBA" HOF.

awful news...i always liked his game and his character in general. seemed to be a good dude, hard worker, non-prima-donna. his should be a cautionary tale about playing non-stop for several years. i think there is no doubt that did him in - at that height, you need to rest your feet a little, and he never got that chance until they were already too damaged.

Big men seem to have their share of foot problems...Walton, McHale, Rodman...and now Yao.   He has been fun to watch and I hope he fits in somewhere in the basketball world (coaching or analysis in China ...or an ambassador for the sport, perhaps...)

Too bad. Good guy and player. He has and will be missed! Good luck Yao!
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

Too bad for the league and for the Rockets who made the correct choice (drafting Yau) but got an unfortunate long-term outcome.  Reminds me a lot of Brad Daugherty whose great career was cut short by injuries at 28 (Cavs picked him over Len Bias).

Maybe good for Yao who perhaps didn't need the limelight and who made a good deal of $$ (hopefully got to keep some of it) and who will have a long life as a sports hero -- and has a chance to use his presence, intelligence and heart to build a career as a world-wide humanitarian if he so chooses.

Hopefully, his injuries are such that without the basketball rigor will heal and not cause him chronic pain.

I saw him play live once in the Gahden.  I was amazed by his size....But mostly his amazing athletism.  Not for his size.  But for any size.  His moves were as fluid as Kareem's.

The other thing that was impressive about Yao is how quick he learned English.

Good guy and great ambassador.
