I remember Bird saying (about Dee) something like "you can't make someone into a $3M a year player just by paying them $3M a year".
I remember Bird saying quite a few catty things about his team mates...probably why he was never my favorite player. When he was on the court, though, he only wanted to win and if that meant making everyone look good, that is what he did. (As opposed to Lebron, who hasn't learned that yet, and still seems to want to make himself look good.)
