The Boston Celtics announced today that they have exercised a contract option on guard Avery Bradley for the 2012-13 season. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bradley, a 6’2” guard, averaged 1.7 points in 5.2 minutes per game this past season for the Celtics. The 19th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft appeared in 31 games for the Celtics and netted a season-high of 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting in the final game of the season against New York on April 13. Bradley also made nine appearances for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League and averaged 17.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 3.0 steals in those contests.

Already !?

Not really shocking. Cheap contract, high possible reward, and after this season, methinks Ray and KG are done-zo.

Maybe they're safeguarding against any CBA changes.

Exactly.  I was coming on to inquire if they'd already exercised the option, and apparently they just did.  If the 2011-2012 season is completely wiped out, it is very possible that Bradley could have become a UFA this time next year.

Management and the coaching staff are really high on this kid. I saw a bunch of his games at Texas while watching Damion James who I wanted the C's to take. This kid has enormous potential.

We my not have seen it but my guess is Doc and Danny saw a ton of progress during the year in practice and in his Red Claws game and see what he's doing this off season.

I think a lot of people are going to eat their words when he comes out and shows the type of player he can be.

He is a shut down defender and possesses a very, very good mid range jumper. By 2012-13, he will be a key future cog and major contributor to this team.

I agree!  This kid was ranked 1, 4, and 5 by three of the top rankings of high schoolers coming into college.

I believe this myself too, either that or he's trade bait, but I'd like to and have to see it on the court myself before I can say he's going to be a future cog and major contributor.

Doc said the other day that Bradley was ready to play NBA defense the moment he was drafted.  Just based on that fact alone, along with the fact that Miami is the biggest threat to the C's long term, make Bradley a must-keep.

My guess is that they believe he will be ready to take over behind Rondo and Ray next year.  Can't wait to see the Rondo-Bradley-Green-JJ-KG lineup on the floor!

Is it just me or is that a really underwhelming lineup?

That's a pretty underwhelming lineup.  It's not just you.

On the other hand, if Bradley and JJ improve to the point that we *could* put out a lineup like that it would be a good thing.

I'm not seeing the appeal myself.  No Ray or PP but keeping KG?  Is that the speedy-D line-up?  I could see Rondo and Bradley causing havoc in the backcourt but Green and JJ have to show me something on D (and the defensive boards) before I get excited about that line-up.

FWIW I don't think he meant a starting lineup...

If you're talking about vs. Miami in the playoffs, you can't really play better defense on Dwayne Wade than Delonte West did.  In that series he was about as aggressive as you can be, and put a lot of energy into denying him the ball.

Even overall Delonte isn't that much worse of a defender than Bradley.  Add in his offensive game and there's no reason Avery should play any backup guard minutes over Delonte West.  He's a bigger "must-keep."
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale
