That's the plan.

...next year.

This year we need him on a 1 year deal to preserve cap space (same with ANY free agent we sign).  Then we can sign him with early-bird rights.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Need to save that MLE bullet.

The initial offer should be a one-year extension of his current deal with a maximum raise (120%).
After that, offer the LLE (assuming it still exists). If another team overbids, only then would I consider using part of the MLE.

I agree with 120% raise option. I would even throw in another year for the same at the teams option. No way he gets the MLE or even the LLE until we run out of other options (FA players).

Delonte need to prove he is healthy enough to be a season long asset and that his head truly is screwed on straight at long last. It's all about trust now, the affection felt for him is a separate issue.

Delonte earned the minimum this year, averaged 5.6 points / 2.7 assists per game, and missed 58 games.  I don't understand why so many fans think he deserves a big raise.

I like Delonte a lot, and hope he comes back.  However, he doesn't deserve anything more than the 120% of the minimum we can give him (currently) with non-Bird rights.
This.

Delonte is a decent bench player but not worth more than that raise over the vet min.
He's got to be able to play a full season, learn how to run a team as a backup PG as well as show more initiative on offense when he's in as the back up SG.  Too often last year that second unit didn't score with Delonte in the game and it usually involved Delonte not taking open shots.

Id sign him for a one year deal. we also have to see how Avery Bradley develops his game...because he plays the same pg/sg backup and has more of an upside now(IMO) if he ups his game, hes the primary backup pg/sg of the future

maybe not a big raise, but i sure want to keep him.

he is a good player and i think it means something to him to be a Celtic. he talked about how much it meant to him that his original team gave him a second shot.

i sure seem to remember him being a dangerous little guard when he was in Cleveland - don't know why he can't do the same for the Celts. is my memory inaccurate ?

Agree on keeping Delonte, but only at 120% of last year's deal.  I think the behavioral problems are a non-issue at this point, as playing on the Cs seemed to have a calming effect on him (or as calm as he will get).  But he has proven fragile, not only last year, but in years past...but he should be able to alter his game, and avoid at least some injuries.

Rondo's a fighter.  I'm sorry you can't see that.

The team would do about as well starting Baby over KG as they would starting West over Rondo.

Delonte has been a productive teammate his whole career. He's a headcase but his attitude is a complete non-issue right now.

It comes down to injury proneness. He's proven he is still good enough to start. Because of that alone, he will command a lot more money than people are giving him credit for.

The question comes down to if he'll take a lowball deal with the Celtics for one year so he can sign a big contract once the Celtics start their new dynasty.

Delonte is one of my favorite basketball players of all time so I can only hope we can figure out how to keep him forever without hurting our free agency chances in 2012.
