Just wondered what people think would be the method for determining the draft order for the '12 draft in the event of a totally lost season next year.

- Same as '11?
- Another lotto with the same lotto teams as '11, non-lotto teams same as '11?
- Weighted lotto for all teams?
- Unweighted lotto for all teams?
- Something else?

Who knows.  Perhaps, in the unlucky event of a lost season, the C's could luck into the #1 overall pick in a strong draft!!!  Hey, a guy can dream, right?

This is an interesting question.

I think the best way would probably be a weighted lottery for all teams, based on something like average winning percentage over the last 3-4 years.

Essentially, you want to use something that would be a good predictor of each team's expected winning percentage this year. You could get even fancier (incorporating things like playoff performance, team age, etc.), but the league would never go for that.

Anything based on recent history would be bad for the Celts. We are worse than our recent record suggests, because we're getting older.

I hope it isn't the same order because then we wouldn't get the Clippers pick for at least another year

Let's hope it never comes to that.

If it does, I say the owners have to rochambeau (South Park style) for it.

This is what the NHL did after their lost season (or something along similar lines).  Considering how valuable top picks can be, it wouldn't be fair to use the same order again.

That would probably be the fairest but I would also hope they take into account the number of players a team still has under contract as well.
If the next season is lost, the C's have practically will have only a handful of players under contract.  I'd hope the league would take that into account in some form of weighting the draw.

The NHL did a weighted lottery based on playoff appearances and previous number one picks, they need had the draft snake for the second round.

I think that'd be reasonably fair. I mean I expect the C's to win somewhere around 50 games, so we'd likely be around where we should given our last two year's records.

I think the more important implications are for the Clippers pick.

The Clips finished 8-6-2 from last in the last three years. Depending on how they do the weighting, and what years they count, this could really affect our chances at having a pick in the 10-15 range.

If we are lucky they will just put one little ball into the lotto machine for everyone and we will get the #1 pick. Nothing wrong about a little optimism  ;D

Wow, thanks for the link. Can you imagine if that happened in today's NBA?  Immediate ejections, fines, penalties, the whole nine yards.
