Rumor: Ainge has discussed trading Rondo

According to Chris Mannix of SI.com.  I'm surprised.  I figured Pierce and Rondo were never truly going to be part of trade discussions.

Sports Illustrated NBA writer Chris Mannix checked in with the Dennis & Callahan show Wednesday morning to talk about the Celtics and Thursday's NBA draft.

Mannix said Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge will not shy away from dealing any player in order to avoid a slow descent into mediocrity, and he noted that even the team's young star, Rajon Rondo, has been the subject of trade talks in the recent past.

"I think he's talking about moving everybody. I really do," Mannix said of Ainge. "I've had conversations with different people around the league; I would throw Rajon Rondo on that list as well. … He has explored dealing Rajon Rondo in the past. He has talked to other GMs about him in the past. I'm not saying he's been willing to pull the trigger in the past, but Rajon Rondo has been on the table in the past year or so.

Mannix goes on to talk about how he expects the "big three" to remain intact (in large part due to a potential lockout restricting the timetable to talk trades), and how he thinks Josh Smith's camp is leaking rumors / pushing for a trade.  Mannix says he'd be wary of Smith if he were Boston.

Mannix suggests either Jeremy Tyler or Reggie Jackson for the Celts in the draft, and gently criticizes Danny for not gambling on projects / upside in the draft recently.  (He doesn't seem all that impressed by Bradley's upside, apparently, seeing him as a safer pick than Mannix's preferred James Anderson).

It doesn't sound like these rumors are all that recent; Mannix talks about "the past" and "the past year".

That said, why wouldn't Danny look into trading Rondo?  He's the most valuable trading chip we have; it's good to at least know what his potential value is.

There are only a handful of guys I'd trade Rondo for, but if New Orleans would move Chris Paul, for instance, I'd do it.

lol I told the guy who said the silence is killing me thread just wait by the end of last night or this morning there will be rumors about the Celtics. And look ones of trading up some BS one of trading KG and bradley and Now all players could very well be a part of a trade dont worry Celtics fans always be on your toes. Some reason I have a feeling that something is going to happen. Don't know if it will be huge but I feel something is def. changing with our team.

I refuse to believe anything Mannix says about the C's.  He always seems to just throw things against the wall, and I have never got the impression he has any good C's sources.  He talks about the C's because of his connections to Boston, but he never seems to be linked in to the actual team, and comes across as just another blogger with no inside info when he talks about them.

With that said, he does have common sense, and I, like him, believe that Danny would not be doing his job if he is not discussing trading Rondo.  Doesn't mean it has much of any chance of happening, but he has to explore every avenue.

Even shopping Rondo around is a bad idea.  Folks say it's 'good business' to do this.  Listen, if you want to build anything worth building in life, YOU HAVE TO COMMIT TO SOMETHING.  Danny needs to either commit to the idea that Rondo is this team's future, or ship him out.  Danny doesn't seem to understand this.  You don't build a team by building an atmosphere of constant fear, uncertainty, and disloyalty.  The attutude of "I'll move anyone anytime" is a fundamentally disloyal attitude.  I find it fascinating that many fans are INCREDIBLY onesided about loyalty.  Many get angry at players who show a hint of disloyalty, while praising the gm for disloyalty to the players!

If Danny doesn't see Rondo as the future, he should trade Rondo while Rondo's value is high.  Otherwise, take Rondo off the table, Danny, and keep him off.

I don't know, I guess I just assumed he is the future and wouldn't be on the table (along with Pierce.)  But you guys are right, Danny should explore every option he has, including those that would cost the team arguably their greatest tradable asset (a young/talented/contract friendly Rondo.)

What if some other team thinks Rondo is worth more then Ainge does? 


Even if Ainge thinks he can build around Rondo, if someone wants to give him a better player...


Good GMs find out.  Unless you have the top player in the league, you check value.

Isnt the job of the GM to explore every players trade value? I dont really see this as a "rumor" just Ainge doing his job.

Well duh, if he doesn't he could miss out on a Rondo for Wade or Rondo for CP3 deal. It never hurts to offer.
