I guess this is good news ?

So, how can things shake out for the Celtics regarding the possible "summer of Howard"?  Here are Boston's future salaries:

And if the Celtics fall under the cap for 2012-2013, doesn't that mean they can't use the MLE for that particular season (if it still exists)? So, if they signed Howard, it wouldn't necessarily mean they could fill out the roster with something that is tempting to get him here in the 1st place, right?

I'm curious about all the details, including what specifically a "flex cap" is.  Obviously, it's more than a $62 million soft cap that teams can go over at their leisure; otherwise, the owners and players would just extend the system that is currently in place.

This looks very promising to me.  This shows real movement by the owners, and it looks to me like they are agreeing to share.

If this is legit, that means that the biggest hurdle may be past, and now they need to get into the smaller stuff.

It doesn't say one way or the other, but I think that if they eliminated the MLE that would do a lot to slow the growth of payrolls.

I am curious whether partially guaranteed contracts are back on the table.

By the way, how much of PP's contract is guaranteed that 4th year? Maybe the plan was to sign a FA next summer and then trade PP's contract for another player the following year on the assumption that they'll drop his contract (letting him retire or even come back later...).

$4 million is guaranteed as of now.  It will be $5 million if he plays in 50% of the games the previous season.

Just a guess, but maybe there's a hard max amount

From what I can gather, it sounds much closer to a hard cap than a soft cap.  Perhaps it is a hard cap with certain exceptions where a team can go over, similar to the current system.  However, the times when they can go over it will be much stricter.

Also, it sounds like one of the keys to this is that it also has a hard bottom of the cap.  That is how they are guaranteeing the players a certain amount of money.

Does this mean the Cs can go nuts in 2012?

It sounds like a soft cap that you can exceed with the usual array of exceptions, such as Bird rights and the MLE, but with a higher hard cap number that you can't exceed instead of a luxury tax threshold.

If the owners claim that isn't a hard cap, then they are liars.

A $62 mil cap would make New York a threat to nab a max player in 2012.  Dang.
