Trade Idea: Bogut for Josh Smith

Brought this up in another thread, and to be clear it's completely baseless just my own thinking.

Milwaukee sends Andrew Bogut, Corey Maggette and a lottery protected first  to Atlanta for Josh Smith and Kirk Hinrich. You could replace Salmons for Maggette there too.

Atlanta locks up a very strong front court for a long time (Horford/Bogut), and a team that could honestly be a competitor. Meahwhile Milwaukee sheds itself of one of their many terrible contracts while getting back a marketable, and more durable star who stylistically is a better match for Jennings.

Bucks say no.


They can get more for one of the few true C in the league today.  Atlanta is the team that would need to throw in a 1st.

I figured that the Bucks would have to throw that in with Atlanta taking another year of Maggette's contract (or two on Salmons')

I think something based more on just Bogut for Smith straight up makes more sense.  And this would only be if Milwaukee was deadset on moving Bogut ASAP.

The bucks have a bunch of PFs, one C.

This improves the Hawks a lot.  Hortford would likely improve playing PF (what he should be).  

Atlanta is the team that needs to pay a premium for such a move.

They only trim one year off Maggette for a 2nd PG they do not need.

Injuries.  Bogut has been playing hurt for nearly 2 years now, and they are really piling up.  I don't think its a stretch to suggest that Bogut could be on a very steep decline over the next few years, and no one would know this better than the Bucks.  

They know that if they hold onto him even another year, and he does not get healthy, his value could completely disappear, so they need to move quickly, if this is their diagnosis.

Of course, if they are shopping him as aggressively as is being reported, I have a feeling other teams are going to be scared away, realizing what's going on.

OK, how about this one:

In this, Milwaukee would get the #4 pick (to get Kanter), and Cleveland gets #2.

To Summarize:

Minnesota gets Josh Smith and JJ Hickson

Milwaukee gets Michael Beasley, Darko Milicic, and #4

Cleveland gets #2 and Wayne Ellington

Atlanta gets Andrew Bogut

...So, Minnesota gets an athletic 3/4 who could be a great finisher on Rubio's fast breaks, and will add some real athleticism to their front-court, as well as another athletic big man.

Milwaukee gets a SF who can really score, a stopgap center, and a young center who is very similar to Bogut.

Cleveland gets to add Williams to Kyrie Irving.

And Atlanta gets the true Center they need to be able to move Horford to PF full time.

EDIT: And frankly Josh Smith is younger, healthier, and a much better all around player.  He doesn't have the size of Bogut obviously, but Horford can't guard most PF's so if the Hawks went with a Horford/Bogut front line, they would get killed by most any team with quickness in the 4/5.  I mean what are the Hawks going to do against L.A., Dallas, Boston, Orlando, etc.  Smith's quickness with Horford's power is a great combination for them and with an actual coach correctly utilizing them, they made the second round and gave the Bulls a real battle.  I think they would trade Smith, but not for someone like Bogut (at least with all the health concerns).  If Bogut was perfectly healthy then I think they would consider the trade.

I'm a big fan of J-Smoothe's game, but if you're 'turning injuries off' I think Bogut is far superior.

bogut would make Atlanta pretty tough to play. However, the Bucks should not be looking to move Bogut. You dont trade a top ten big man in this league. Bogut is definitely a guy you build around, not trade away.
