Those are some real sweet kicks, but I think I have found my basketball sneakers for life (so long as they retain their key features through each year’s editions). I’m going to take a lot of heat for this, but the Kobe’s, specifically the V’s (haven’t tried the VI’s yet), are the best basketball sneaker I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a lot).
Ok, before I get to why they’re so good, let me explain. As a die hard Celtics fan, and Lakers hater, it was a tough pill to swallow, but I had read so many positive reviews, I had to try them. If they hadn’t been anything but the best basketball sneaker ever, I would have been bringing them back. My own performance on the court is maybe the one and only thing that comes before the Celtics.
Anyway, the designer’s of the Kobe series first of all realized that the high top did next to nothing for ankle support. If you land on someone’s foot wearing a running sneaker or a high top basketball sneaker, your ankle sprain is going to be the same either way. The only way you can mitigate that is from taping, or from a good ankle brace. So reducing the size of the shoe reduces the weight, and they may be the lightest sneaker I’ve ever worn. Having said that, my foot truly feels protected when wearing them, not like some of the hyperize models with their thin flywire sides. I wasn’t sure about the traction before buying them – that seemed to be the only area where it was scoring 9’s instead of 10’s, but the traction is the best I’ve ever seen. Admittedly, I haven’t worn these for 1 second outside, but even on dusty courts, I have never seen myself slide in the slightest. Despite all that, there’s still one thing that sets them apart from all other basketball sneakers. They have the best lockdown of all time. Your feet are in there so snugly without it being too tight, and you have such a good feel for everything your foot is doing. Your foot just does not move inside them at all. You never role the edge of your foot over the edge of the sole when you cut hard for instance, and it makes picking up a quick point guard and hounding him from end to end a breeze. Because of the lack of movement, I just don’t get blisters anymore, even when playing for several hours at once. These will not let you down, and they will feel like no other basketball sneaker. Having said all that, I just don’t even think about them unless someone comments on them – incidentally, I did not get lakers colors haha – mine are red and yellow.
