One of the great things about that 1996 Bulls teams was how good they were at creating extra possessions.
They out-rebounded their opponents by 541 boards on the season + 230 advantage in turnover differential due to their ability to force turnovers and their ability to avoid turnovers offensively. That gave them 771 more possessions to work with than their opponents. 9.4 extra possessions a game.
Do you believe they would have that kind of rebounding edge head to head against Parish, McHale, Bird & Walton?
I don't.
To me even if they had an advantage on the glass( which I kind of doubt) they would be a a huge disadvantage at getting the best possible shot. The 86 Celtics have to go down as one of if not the greatest passing teams of all-time. That is what I really appreciate about our current Celtics but the Celtics of the mid 80's took making the extra pass to a completely different level.
Although Jordan himself was a nightmare to defend the 86 Celtics were equally if not even more difficult to defend as a unit. It kind of encapsulates the difference between Bird and Jordan. Bird was committed to getting the best possible shot for either himself or one of his teammates. Jordan was committed to getting the best possible shot for himself. I for one believe five guys are much harder to defend then one amazing player especially when those five guys play together as a unit like those Celtics did.
