One thing I'll say about Minny trading away Kevin Love is that if they have any plans to trade him ever, now is the time. His trade value is never going to be higher than now. He is 22 years old, just put up 20 and 15 and broke Moses Malone's double double record. You sell him on having done that at only age 22, but in reality he'll be extremely lucky to have 2 more seasons of stats like that in his entire career. The reason Love put up those kind of stats is because he had a garbage team around him. He is not talented enough to put up those stats on a team talented enough to be over .500.
Maybe Kahn realizes this and is why he's looking to swing a deal involving Love while his value is so high.
Perhaps, but that doesn't mean you give him (and a top 3 pick -- even in a weak draft) for a 31 year old borderline All-Star when you're still rebuilding. Makes no sense at all.
If anything, it makes more sense to hold onto Love, continue to suck, and hope that you get that #1 superstar in the draft so that Kevin Love can be the great #2 he absolutely can be.
Make no mistake: Kevin Love is a very valuable player. You don't put up those kinds of numbers, night in and night out, with that level of efficiency, without being a very good player. There are two reasons people are quick to dismiss his production: 1) the T-Wolves lost a LOT of games and 2) Love is white and unathletic.
Reason 1 can be explained by the fact that the rest of his team was almost complete garbage; if it weren't for K-Love, the Wolves probably wouldn't have cracked double digit wins. People would probably really easily forgive the first reason if it weren't for the second one. Remember how many people were high on Durant a few years ago even though his team was terrible? Or how about how much attention Blake Griffin got this year for putting up huge numbers on a terrible team?
It actually kind of reminds me of the way people often overlook the success of Duncan's teams because Duncan (and Ginobili, Parker) has always won with fundamentals, defense, and finesse instead of highlight-reel athleticism. Also, like K-Love their personalities match their style of play.
All of this is not to say that K-Love is a superstar, or that he is by any means on the same level as Duncan and those others. Obviously, his lack of defense is an issue; however, I think that the question should be what kind of players Love needs to have around him in order for his team to succeed rather than whether he is really a player that can be a major contributor on a winning team.
For that reason I think this "rumored" trade would be an absolute steal for the Lakers because Bynum is EXACTLY the kind of player that K-Love needs to be partnered with.
