Yeah, in the end of the day, it's really more about managing minutes than it is starters vs. the bench. Still, it is nice to see the kind of professionalism Ray Allen exudes in not caring about starting or not.

We'd need a starting caliber 2 because IMO, Paul Pierce is an above average defender at the 3 spot but I'm afraid he'd be below average at the 2 spot.  He's just not quick enough anymore to play 30+ minutes defending shooting guards and it would effect him negatively on the offensive end.  Kind of the way defending LeBron takes so much of his energy that he most times doesn't make a big impact on offense.  Well it would be worse chasing around shooting guards all night long.

I think that the solution to this is simple. Pierce plays SG on O and SF on D and Green starts (I like diconzo's starting lineup +1) and plays the 3 on O and the 2 on D.

Bring Ray off the bench for that supercharge.

Paul off the bench to me makes the most sense.  We get green as a low post offensive threat on sf defending him.  Ray spreads floor for this and rondos lanes.

I agree Pierce makes more sense off the bench.  OTOH Ray's the most likely to be traded away, and taking both Ray and Pierce out of the starting lineup could be challenging, depending on whom they'd have for the 2.

My impression is that Green doesn't guard athletic 3's very well at all, and would get torched at the 2.

Ray Allen may be a rhythm shooter, but he's also a pro's pro, and if anyone can make coming off the bench work, it's Ray Ray.

Look, he isn't getting any younger and if Doc played him 20-25 minutes a game instead of 37 it might extend his career another two years.  That means more $$$.  And money talks.

I saw the stats on espn somewhere but lebron only shot 38% with green defending him.

Anyways thinking about it. Realistically none of them have to come off the bench if green can play up to his potential. He has the athleticism and skillst to provide scoring off the bench. But he's got to be more aggressive.

I think that he more than holds his own with 3s defensively, especially because of his length (remember that he was playing out of position at the 4 in OKC) and that he is quicker, longer and faster than Ray and will keep 2s in front of him with a longer hand in their face and if they get by him, he has the athleticism to recover.

Dallas Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle said after the Mavericks won the championship, in answer to a question about why he made JJ Barea a starter, that along with Jason Kidd they needed another playmaker to deal with the Heat defense. When he said that, I recalled how much better a playmaker, ball handler, and layup maker among tall players that JJ is than Ray Allen. Ray Allen is the best spot up jump shooter and has a good mid range shot, but he’s not a playmaker or much of a ball handler.

Unless a guy is playing 48 minutes, which these guys can't do, they all come off the bench at some point.

I read recently that RA was most efective in the 1&3 periods when he started them off, but his performance eroded as the 2nd and4th periods happened, So he can play 1 and 4, so they get a jump on the opposition and hurt them when it counts in the fourth. Now I'm not suggesting he sit the 2md and 3rd but he is managed to keep him in the flow, but reserve his juice for the maximum impact.

This really goes for all three. Manage minutes regardless if they are starters to focus on the end of games and the end of the season. Sure the bench needs to step upm but Doc needs to eat his own breakfast "trust each other" and play some of the younger guys to mange the minutes during the season and build experience for the end of the year.

we need a durable Wing who can back up Ray during the season and knock down 3's

Delonte is good, but chances are he'll miss time next season...Von wafer was supposed to be that guy but he never found his 3 point shot

Eh, I'm glad to see he would do it, but I don't want him to.  I still think it's more on Rivers managing minutes then changing the starting 5.  You just have to keep 2 of Rondo, Pierce, Allen and KG on the floor at all times.  It's got nothing to do with who starts, you just have to keep 2 of them out there no matter what.
do it

It probably will never happen, but it would seem like heaven to have all three stay with the Celtics and come off the bench when they reach the end of their careers.  That would be the best bench EVER!
